Acrylic Nail for modeling purpose.

aroc's picture

I came across something the other day that I'm going to try.  My wife was "doing her nails" with one of those acrylic nail systems.  Once you put on the nails themselves you apply an acrylic nail solution.  It's basically a power that you mix with a liquid and form a paste.  You can do just about anything with it as far as molding or filling in gaps.  Once you sand it smooth it looks great.  I know there are products out there designed for our hobby but I figured I'd share this one with you just in case someone needs something like this and can't find anything else.  I have

Suggestions for Mechanic's Lift

FrankG's picture

I'm looking to scratchbuild a single-column car lift that you'd expect to find in a 1940s service station.

At this point, I'm mostly looking for reference material.  The problem is that Google is loaded with modern lifts (mostly two or four column).

Does anyone know where I can get decent reference material?  Or have any knowledge about size, etc?

New Shelf Layout

rpcelect's picture

After spending a bunch of time and money on a Kato track based hollow core door layout (mostly last year), I eventually decided it was just too much for our tiny apartment. When we moved (unfortunately from one apartment to another) the door layout was leaned againt a wall and was never moved. One rainy day I started to scope out some of the extra wall space we had and decided I could easily put in a small point to point shelf layout. Our club had also recently started up a brand new code 55 based module layout, so I was eager to do somthing with code 55 at home.

Street run

Hi,

I'm going to move house (not really the house but I'll go up 2 levels :) ) and finally I will have some space for a little layout. I don't know if I told You, I'm interested in more types of scenery so I decided I will make modules. I would like to start with a street run module. I don't have any specific ideas about it yet, and thats why I need Your help. I watched pics about Jack London Square in Oakland, CA and I like that very much, I think I will try to create something like that.

Igniting the paper debate

I realize that many people think that paper buildings have no place in model railroad. I'm one of those people that vociferously disagrees. As a small practice diorama, I built this:

Sheep - at a distance

Komata's picture

A question for our membership:

I need to create the illusion of a mob (large flock) of sheep walking along a sheep-track on the side of a hill at the rear of a layout.

The animals can't be painted-in images, must be 3-dimensional because they will be looked down upon from a height,  be whitey-brown (they would be Merino's) and, because of the distance/width etc, cannot be 'packet' animals (which are too big)

I had considered using WS Coarse Foliage painted white to give the 3-d effect, but am would be interested in any other ideas.

Railroad Photos

MooseID's picture

I came across this link while doing some research unrelated to railroads.

For a lark, I typed 'railroad' into the search engine and it came up with over 15 thousand photos of steam engines.

Yep, that is 15,000+ photos of steam engines featuring many types and railroads.

It really goes to show how great the public libraries are for research.

Have fun.
