The Met

Here's a rarity, a blog entry midweek. This is what happens when I get unexpected time off from work. I have finally settled on a bench design, so now I can finalize the actual track and layout plans. Phase one has to be the subway. Nicknamed "The Met". short for Metropolitan Electrified Transit, it will be built on a lower level (duh) and will reach far out into the space. This is mostly for time considerations. The only visible part of the line will be the area designated as "Subway Station" in the accompanying diagram. The train will emerge from a portal to the left, pause for a short time at the station, then depart down the tunnel. A short time later it will return on the other track, going in the other direction, and so on for as long as I care to let it. There will be a plexi-glass panel in the side of the benchwork to allow guests to see it. The trackwork shown in purple is the spur that gets the train from above ground to below. At the end of this spur will be a work facility, where the Met is maintained.

I envision the platform to have a news stand, and escalator, elevator and stairway. Perhaps also a coffee shop, or kiosk, and of course, turnstiles will complete the display. Above it, will be the main Beaufield passenger terminal, with connections to all points.

For rolling stock I found a Japanese passenger consist of two cars which, at a glance, through plexi-glass will give the desired appearance. The train is by Tomix and is no longer in their catalogue.

My interest is piqued!

I haven't ever heard of anyone modelling a subway - particularly in N scale!  (Perhaps I've been living under a rock.)

Looking forward to seeing this blog progress - best of luck - you now have dedicated reader!

OK, it's official, you've been living under a rock

I did see a rather intriguing N-Scale representation of the London Underground at a train show; the owner indicated that he is not alone...

Cool idea. I wish I had a city on my layout large enough to justify a subway.  Keep us posted.  Definitely an interesting project.
