frustration

Another week has passed, and I promised myself an entry a week, so I guess I have to write. I am currently stymied with the trackwork on the subway system. Before I can move beyond this point, the Met has to run flawlessly, and it just doesn't. It will make 15 perfect trips around the loop and then derail for no apparent reason on the 16th. I have mixed atlas with unitrack and that seems to be part of the problem.  I have placed a re-railer strategically after the point where it jumps the iron, and that helps, but only some of the time. So while I tweak and prod, nothing else seems to be happening and I am reading all these great articles about scratch-built structures and trees and wishing I were at that point. I expect that I will go with 100% unitrack but my LHS is currently out of straights, so I wait, and as any fan of Tom Petty can tell you...the waiting is the hardest part.

Wait patiently Albey.

You are probably right about the mix of track being the problem.  I'll be patiently waiting for you to get far enough along to post pictures of your subway system. That's something I always wanted to try, but none of my cities is anywhere near large enough to justify a subway.

I would think...

If the rails were aligned, the path through them smooth, and no obstructions from joiners, etc., that this (mixing brands) would not be a major issue. That said, I have no experience with unitrack and will probably keep it that way.

In order to not lose focus on the rest, is it possible to build the 'upper level' removable so you can divert yourself from the track issue periodically? When I have a real stumper the best thing I can do sometimes is leave for a few days, then "BLAM!" the solution hits me square in the face.

Just some thoughts for your sanity's sake!

system??

Jim,

Thanks for your interest, but it hardly qualifies as a subway system. It is just one station, and the train will loop around and pass through it in each direction. I wanted to have a subway, but only as an adjunct to a regular layout. I have to admit though, it does make for an intriguing idea, that of modeling an entire underground system.

Inevitably the modelling of an underground railway has been done - by the British, who, being always inclined towards the oddball (and there is absolutely no disrespect intended by that comment) have modelled the London Underground railway system (the world's oldest), in a variety of scales.
