More Fun with rolling stock

I've been continuing to have fun working with rolling stock this last week, with the run up to Christmas and all the parties and extra activities I've not had a chance to do too much but I have tackled a project I have wanted to try for a while.

Canadian Pacific cabooses had two windows per side and the CP caboose models I've found have always had script lettering and extra windows. Also they have been for the most part, one exception being the last micro trains released CP caboose in a 70's paint scheme, painted incorrectly. I have always wanted to tackle modifying a caboose to a more prototypical model. In the past I have just only gone half way by painting the ends china red and the roofs grimy black but I have never tried to fill in the windows and re decal a car, so I did.

Enter the victim one brand new Atlas trainman $10.00 caboose. Painted a solid brown with 1962 Script markings.

First step strip down the model, remove roof walks and separate the body from the under frame. Then fill all those extra windows 5 in total with styrene sheet and putty the edges.

Next paint the roof with flowquil grimy black, sides with Flowquil tuscan and the ends with Humbrol gloss red. Let dry a few days and the reassemble the car.

Now the final step to re letter the car I used CDS dry transfers for this and its about the 3rd time I used them. It's my opinion that this is something thats going to take some practice but while not perfect i'm reasonably happy with my effort. Next time will be better. I used a block letter patern used before the script letters so it back dates the caboose a few years.  I think after looking at the pictures in detail I'll add glazing to the windows a bit of dust to the trucks and get this car on the road.

A little effort and this $10.00 car now looks like $25.
