The TICKFORD VALLEY RAILWAY CO (LONDON) LTD is pleased to announce that it has acquired title to the WAITEKERERU DISTRICT TRAMWAY, formerly owned by the Waitekereru District Council, with immediate effect.
The Waitekereru District Tramway connects with the TVR Kereru Branch Line at Helston, and was originally built to serve the remote settlements inland from Helston, being opened in 1925.
It is the last District Council-operated Tramway in the Northern Taranaki area.
The acquisition of the WDT will expand the operations of the TVR, an contribute to the TVR revenue-stream as a result.
The newly acquired railway is to be known as THE WAITEKEREU TRAMWAY
As a result of the acquisition, a period of substantial development has commenced, with new track being laid, appropriate electrical connections made, a Goodshed siding and platform installed at Konake, (pending the arrival of suitable buildings), and new tunnels driven through the hitherto impenetrable Great Scenic Divide - this latter being a major obstacle to progress, due to the existence of the dreaded Gatorboardium in its sheet-form and the resulting need to adopt specialist tunnelling techniques to counter the problems inherent with this material!
It was found that the use of a thin steel blade, rotated at varying speed and through a series of compex angles was most suitable for the task, with hole-through of the gatorborardium being achived in a matter of seconds as opposed to the previous minutes.
Such has been the speed with which this upgrade has occurred that it has already been possible to allow the first trains over the newly acquired tramway, with a branch line diesel locomotive, several wagons and a Guards Van operating throughout the area to check clearances and curvature.
This is of course a credit to the foresight and engineering abilities of the TVR Management, particularly of the Managing Director and Chairman of the Bored.
