I made good progress today

I took apart the remaining major impediments to getting my basement in condition to start railroad comstruction today. Those impediments were two sets of metal shelves that held all sorts of stuff from magazies to models (I also build model ships) and assorted junk as well. Some of these things will come back into the room once the benchwork is up.

Getting started with DCC

Today I took the plunge. I asked one of my fellow club members to install a decoder in one of my diesels. I also learned how to actually run it on the club layout. Boy what a difference from DC.

The locmotive is a Kato SD-80MAC and the decoder is the appropriate Digitrax decoder. The conversion took all of 5 minutes. Plus another few minutes of playing with DT400R and getting used to using it and I was all set. I had the locomotive pull 14 cars and boy was it a dream to use.

On Joining a Model Railroad Club

Back in the early to mid 1980s I was an avid N-scale model railroader. That is until 1987 when I demolished my last incomplete layout to make way for remodelling my home. But while I did have a some track and the beginnings of a yard, I never got anywhere with what I was trying to do. I don't remember all of the details of that track plan but it was located in a 10 foot x 13 foot room and it was shapped like an E. I still have part of the benchwork but it's covered by all sorts of junk stored there in the wake of our last remodel in 2004.
