Experiments in N scale photography

NH2006's picture

Trying a few new ways to take pictures, longer exposures ambient light versus flash, etc.  This is a lot harder than I would have predicted.  I shoot the real stuff all the time and feel pretty good about it (see my other blog posts).  N scale is so small and with such limited depth of coverage versus the detail I would like to show, it has become much harder than I expected.

A day in the of Phantom Pass: CB&Q and Rio Grande

Ah spent many hours running some fun stuff over the pass.  Here a DRGW F3A-F3B-GP30-GP30 led coal train is passing by a CB&Q light power move with a GP7-Sd7-SD9 set.  A DRGW ore train is in the background too.  Finally have power for 3 passenger trains and 5 freight trains, most are coal around here.  Gotta contribute to global warming ya know...

I finally have solid sets of  power for the CNW, DRGW, CB&Q, ATSF and Conrail.  I may stop here (NOT!)

Chasing Western Pacific heritage 1983 over Sherman Hill

I spent the day in every kind of weather: snow, rain, freezing rain, sun, fog, wind. It was outstanding but a bit scary, especially when I saw multiple rollover accidents. Some I do not have a very good feeling about, I pray those folks have only minor injuries. I saw 2 jack-knifed tractor-trailer sets, 3 complete wrecks of tractor-trailer with totaled cabs, 4 pickups trucks in very bad shape, 3 SUVs rolled over, and several other accidents. Finally I made it to Cheyenne, and heard the Granite Switcher heading out.

Selling myself

So many things I want to keep....sigh.....but I really need the money this year.   It's a pretty interesting list, lots of undecorated stuff since I gave up on a painting project, plus lots of eastern (Erie Lackawanna, PRR) and western (SP, ATSF) locos.  Lots of Kato and Atlas locs, almost all in great shape.

Switching the ore cars

A recently acquired Santa Fe zebra VO-1000 on the switch job, this shot was part of a challenge to "Show me Your Switchers"  I haven't added the  details on this model yet as I have not decided if I should keep it.  It is a beauty and runs well, maybe I'll team it up with the two Rio Grande  H15s that you can see below.

1:1 Scale SD40-2s in Wyoming and up on Sherman Hill

The Herzog rock train is headed up Sherman Hill to Granite. Taken September 2007.  Often they have a nice combination of UP and BNSF power, this one better with no orange...Yes I am tired of orange engines.  I see orange all the time, worse it is often the same old Heritage 2 Dash9s though seeing the new nightmare paint scheme ES44s is worse.

Rio Grande Action over Phantom Pass

NH2006's picture

Some Rio Grande, assembling the power I've got into a coal train with 2 SD50s, a manifest with a SD60-SD9-SD9, a light engine move with 2 GP30s and a small branch set with H15-44-H15-44-F7B power.
