I have a older MRC 501N throttlepack that I'm looking to replace.

I'm just staring out and am on a limited budget so I've been looking on e'bay. I was planning on running two trains so I'm not sure which is better two units or a unit with dual power.I know that MRC units have a great reputation.Does anyone have a recommendation of unit I should be looking for and which to stay away from?

I suspect that any of the newer units will work out great for you.  My only recommendation would be to give one a "test drive" before a purchase.  I would try and get a unit with a nice big throttle that has a smooth-as-butter rheostat.  You'd be amazed at how much smoother (and more realisitc) your locomotive operations will be with this one simple feature.

Good hunting!
