My wife and I took a brunch cruise on Lake Champlain today for our anniversary. Two years! Yay us! Here's hoping she doesn't kill me before we make it three. :D Anyway, on the way back to shore we were standing on deck when I spotted a line of passenger cars. My wife thought they might be Amtrak cars. As we got closer to the dock, I spotted a Green Mountain locomotive through the trees, then, a bit further on, a Vermont Railways locomotive. When we got back to shore, we followed a bike path back toward where we had spotted the cars. As it turns out, the bike path goes right past the Burlington, Vermont train yard. My wife was nice enough to hang around for a bit so I could snap some photos. First, the roundhouse: Some miscellaneous cars: As it turns out, the passenger cars we had spotted from the boat were part of The Champlain Flyer. I thought of Griff when I saw this one: A bit further down the line, I also spotted this one: Most of the other cars were relatively clean. It's northern Vermont. Nine months out of the year it's too cold for kids to be out tagging. There was also a Clarendon and Pittsford caboose: Finally, there were four or five locomotives. I couldn't get great shots of all of them, but I got some nice ones of the Green Mountain 803. Vermont Railways 201: Vermont Rail System 202 - The Champlain Flyer (I think, I couldn't see the side): HLCX 3610: Green Mountain 803: Enjoy the photos! -Elroy

There was a fantastic article in Model Railroader in the 1980s that covered the Green Mountain's Bellows Falls, Vermont yard. Had some great shots in there for modelers!

Vermont Railways Yard Photos
TaltosVT, First and foremost, congrats to your wife on her anniversary  . I assume the Champlain Flyer no longer flys?. Looking at those cars, I hope that they could be put to some good use. Otherwise, some really good pix. Sometimes its tough to get close enuf to the motive power, but u do have some good pix of a small railroad. Great picture of Green Mountain 803 - could be a modeling job. By the way, does the railroad let their units get tagged like HLCX 3610? (Maybe small railroads don't have anyone in the yards 24/7.) Nice pix on an anniversary date - thank the wife! oldcook43 "Still a kid at heart :!: "

Thanks for the tip! I've been seriously thinking about modelling that yard. I took a look at Model Railroader's site. The article was in December of 1987. I'll have to see if I can find a back-issue somewhere.

As far as I know they still run excursion trains during the summer. They may be shut down for the season at this point though. Other than the one bit of graffitti, the cars were in great shape.

I didn't see anyone in the yard at all. I probably could have walked right up to the locomotives and climbed on board. I was good and stayed behind the fences though. I don't think I've ever seen a bit of paint on a GMR or VTR locomotive that didn't belong there in the first place. They keep their motive power in pretty good condition, almost to the point of looking new in some cases. Especially the tourist trains. Boxcars on the other hand tend to travel a bit more, so they get painted up a bit. -Elroy

I have heard that that particular Flyer (they have/had 3) was no more, but their site does indeed list a couple of trips up there. Perhaps they just don't use as many coaches, hence some being tagged... JD

What is it?
What is that three axle trailer parked beside the Thiele tanker car? What is it used for? Looks like a cool modeling project to stump visiters to your layout.

My guess was that it's the honey wagon for servicing the heads on the champlain flyer and maybe the crew toilets in the locos. It's low slung so it seems to be a sump/drain of some kind rather than for virgin fluids which tend to be hauled in taller trailers and although it's a triaxle, it's not very big by railroad standards so by a process of elimination it's for a comparatively low volume waste product.

I'm visiting a friend in Chester this summer and I'll be taking Amtrak Philadelphia to Bellow Falls and connecting to the Green Mountain. I'll try to get some pics to post. Those are some great shots there, thanks for sharing, Talto.

Great shots! And congrats

Great shots! And congrats on the Anni. She sounds like a keeper, mine of almost 40 years has been drug to so many rail yards over the years, that she says she feels like a Hobo...LOL I am lucky she has had a lot of patience with my obsession. She even plans train trips for the family.

Best wishes to all

Ted
