I assume you mean when it's loaded........And that's where things get complicated. There are different heights of containers. I have a concor autorack and I did a quick check .....a 40' standard height container on top of a pair of 20's (or another standard 40') is shorter......a 40' High Cube on top of the 20's is close to equal height...anything else is taller, in some cases by quite a bit. I have a pair of 53' JBHUNT containers and I can read the JBHUNT logo on the top container over the top of the autorack. More specifically....from roadbed to top of car the tallest container car is about 1 3/4 " and the autorack is about 1 5/8". You didn't specify what container car you were using, but I checked the interail, DI, Roundhouse and walthers cars I have and there really isn't any difference between the heights of brands.

How high the stack is depends on a number of factors... What car are you using? What Container are you using? Have you made any modifications to the car that would affect height (i.e. have you lowered it to make it more prototypical or raised it to cllear a truck mounted coupler?) Without specific answeres to the questions above, here are some things for you to consider. The top of an NMRA clearance gauge is 22' above the rail. N-trak requires 23' of verticle clearance above the top of the rail. All cars in regular operation on the prototype railroads here in the US will clear an obstructionn 22' above the top of the rail. Double Stack cars carrying two 9'6" high domestic containers and tri-level enclosed autoracks are the tallest cars in regular operation. (If I recall correctly, the height of the tallest prototpe autoracks is 21'2"). The Con-Cor autoracks are Bi-level autoracks, so they should be shorter than a double stack car loaded with domestic containers. Paul

I don't have any Double Stack cars yet. The reason I'm asking is some of my bridges are low, they will clear an Autorack with a little room to spare. I wanted to check on height so I can check to see if I can run Double stacks over the line..Thanks for the info and the time you spent researching this for me..Thanks again all.. :D

Not a problem.......My problem with both those cars was side clearance on some of my double track tunnel portals, those big cars just take a little more effort to make them work sometimes.

I'm glad you mentioned side clereance.. I was under the impression that if an autorack could go in without hitting anything a container train should be able to clear also.. I know tunnels from single to double from differant manufacturers can have differant sizes in width and height..I've had to enlarge some of my tunnels for the autoracks to clear..
