Hello everyone.Im in the process of building a new layout and a intermodal yard is a must.... But i have a couple questions.First what is a good distance between the rails? And second is there any aerial views somewhere on yards in the eastern usa to give me a couple ideas? Thanks in advance. :D

If you have Google Earth, you can get a good view of NS Rutherford yard. Under search type in: Derry St & N61 St Harrisburg, PA You can also get an aerial view on Mapquest, but the Google is clearer.

If I recall...

you'll have paired tracks with barely enough space for the lifting equipment to do it's job, with lots of space between pairs for trailer and container loading on trucks, with a stack of containers down one end or along the middle in peak periods.

Loaded containers are a risk and liability, so I think they would be off the premises as quickly as possible, while empties pile up awaiting demand.

I'm going to use this approach on a two-track terminal, with approximately 6 feet of loading track, and selectively compress the distance between the track and perimeter. I only have about 27 inches to work with and I would like to get other facilities (maybe a trucking company?) in behind it.

I'll post photos when it become reality.

You think that's a jungle
You think that's a jungle look at the intermodal and engine terminal in Vaughan, now that's a jungle.  It's also where the Triple Crown roadrailers come in and out.

About 14 feet...

I found this image (below) of a small yard on the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County website.  The distance from center to center seems to be 14 feet - which works out to about 1 1/16" or 2.6cm.

This seems a little tight as I've always tended to space tracks at 1 1/4" (finger room).

4 tracks, one roadway?

I suppose they must know what they are doing and can unload that fast. I think two and one will be the limit for my straddle cranes though, and probably stick with that. I may include spurs (old abandoned previous owner tracks?) on the lot, and make use of them if I can work it in...

Walthers Crane?

Didn't know there was one; I have the Vollmer kit-built, and I think it's good for two tracks plus.

The MiJack by Walther's is not big enough for two tracks+ ("It's wide enough to straddle two rows of trailers or containers parked side by side,..." http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3222). I'll need to leave room for it to go between rows, under the premise that it normally only works single rows of cars...

I don't have mine in front of me, and my intermodal yard only has one track, but I believe it could span more than one... depending on how the tracks are spaced.

The Walther's website lists the Mi-Jack's dimentions as: 4 X 3-1/8 X 3".
