sigh - never hurts to research and ask what you're paying for...

Hi all-

Just thought I'd relate my recent locomotive-buying experience.  first off, I have only a very very small space to run my trains.  Like only a small switching yard.  So, since I plan on doing a 1950's Utah layout eventually, I thought I'd get one of Kato's new UP NW-2 locos.  Well, I couldn't find a dealer that also had everything else I wanted, so I decided that since I kind of have a thing for non-emd diesels, I'd get an Atlas baldwin vo-1000.  Looked like the right time period and like a nice model.  So, since you guys here rock and I was able to look it up on the loco encyclo, I determined that the first run of this loco, the ones made in Korea were less than stellar, but that later, since 2003,  Atlas started to make them in China with all their other stuff and that most if not all the problems had been worked out.  I think to myself, "self, you're good.  It's 2008.  There's no way that's not a Chinese model being sold to me brand new to me from a dealer. Not from Ebay."  Well, it IS a korean VO-1000.  I know because I'm having a heck of a time fitting, let alone gluing the irritatingly fiddly handrails to the loco frame.  All I had to have done was ask.   Just thought I'd remind you of something I'm sure you're all VERY versed in.  KNOW WHAT YOU'RE BUYING.  Anyway.  I really do like Kato's PA-1, which I also purchased from the same dealer.  Everything the dealer did was top notch, I'm not trying to disparriage their good name, just myself, who ws too dumb to ask which version of loco he was buying.  Any tips on attaching these handrails and brake hoses?  My tools are limited.

Cheers

Austin

I think the only way most

I think the only way most of us, including myself, learn is by trial and error. I've had the same issues myself and after being bitten once, I've learned to be shy.
