I have a Conrail Dash-8 locomotive that I want to repaint for CN; just wondering if anyone knows an economical way to convert the cab to a wide cab version that CN uses. Does anyone have custom parts out there? Please help!

Thanks!

Styrene and plastic cement
Styrene and plastic cement will do it cheaply. You just need to find the plans to work from.

Kaslo has some cabs and kits for Canadian prototypes... you might also try Athabasca.

Kaslo shells not available for dash 8 yet

The Kaslo shells are great and I have now done a SD50 and SD60 cowl unit.  I have several of the wide cab kits for GP38/40 and SD40, but have not made them yet.   There were some superb models of the SD50/60 here a few months back- really inspirational.

The Kaslo website has hinted at a CN 8-40 cowl shell, but it has not surfaced as of a few days ago.  I have been hoping it would appear, as the prospect of fabricating the body from scratch is fairly intimidating to me.  Not much of the stock shell would be of use, only the chasis.

Maybe an enquiry with Kaslo will help move it along!

Thanks, guys.I have some

Thanks, guys.

I have some photos of my model subject, so I think I'll start with styrene, and see how it looks. If I can't get it right, I can always try get away with modifying one of Kaslo's Dash-9 cabs.

Wish me luck.

Just been checking out the

Just been checking out the Athabasca site- looks like they may have something, but it's in brass- something I've never worked with. Is it hard to assemble and paint?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Maybe somebody remembers a good thread on brass working. (I guess that's kind of lazy. Let me go do a quick search myself.)

Wide cab conversion

There is only one problem with your plan.CN does not have any dash 8 40Cs.Their dashes are all 9s

Catt, could you clarify
Catt, could you clarify your statement please... I have little to no knowledge of Canadian railways, but a Google search finds several sites with images of CN Dash 8-40CW's, and models of the same in HO by Atlas.

Clarifying

Since the first Dash units that CN bought were Dash-9s I would like to see these Dash-8 photos Bryan.

I don't recall CN buying up any railroads that had Dash 8s I can only assume the photos are mislabeled

I go to this website where

I go to this website where all of CN's equipment is listed. http://cnlines.ca/CNcyclopedia/

CN has a number of both Dash-8's and 9's. But I think the 8's are the wide body style, or something like that. But I'm not a rivet counter, I just think that the narrow cab looks silly on the newer big diesels.

I just placed my order from Bob at Athabasca Scale Models. Thanks for the link, guys. 11 bucks is a whole lot better than me trying to scratchbuild something on my own.

Just a few of the many

Just a few of the many references I found to Dash 8-40CW's being used by CN.

Quote:
Canadian National was the first Canadian railroad to purchase main line GE locomotives - 30 of the 4000hp Dash 8-40CM (C40-8M) units in 1990 (2400-2429)

CN Dash 8s

The CN dash 8's are CMs not CWs mechanically they are the same but the CMs have a full cowl body and bear no resembalance to the CWs.

Buzzrexx, the cab you ordered is the Canadian widecab which I think looks much better than GE's widecab infact all of my GVR Dash 8s have this cab, actually a modified ATLAS SD60M cab.My GVR Dash 9s use the Kaslo cab which is dead on acurate for the Canadian cab.

I hope you post some pics of your finished unit as I am a big fan of the dash 8s.

From what I can see, CN

From what I can see, CN 2455-2466 where Dash 8-40CW's.

http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Canadian_National_Railway

An example

I've seen listings from both B'mann Spectrum and Atlas for CN Dash 8-40CW's in HO scale... would either of these companies make models of locos that don't exist? Considering there are so many that do exist that they don't cover, I would find this unlikely.

From my limited searching, these units started out on a 6 month lease from Conrail, but later this changed to a year round deal, and they where issued CN numbers.

All of the origonal CN Dash

All of the origonal CN Dash 8s are CMs as stated previously  http://stewart.railfan.net/rail/cndash8.htm will give you a list and pictures of most of them. The non CN Dash 8s are standard Cs with sparton cabs not widecabs.Even if they were widecabs itwould be the US and not the Canadian style "Safety Cab".

Actually I am surprized that RailOhio didn't catch this, but then again he may be eating pie and riding AMTRAK Laughing

I finally found some pics of the CN dash 8CWs.They are ex LMS lease units ,they are Conrail blue with white CN logos and have the US style GE safetycabs.
