locomotive. It seems to be pushing it off to the side. Would the Micro-trains coupler have a better swing for the radius ? I read that the 11.25 would be okay with this engine, I wouldn't want to go any smaller. Is the conversion difficult to the MTL couplers?
Kato GE c44-9w Couplers and Rolling stock.
I have a Kato GE C44-9W with the standard Kato couplers. I am having trouble on an 11.25 radius curve (code 55) with the box car being derailed by the

Kato GE C44-9W and MT couplers
I understand that there is a MT conversion set for this locomotive. The problem is that Kato couplers don't work well on tight curves and that include your 11.25s. You probably wouldn't have a problem if your curves were much larger. Consult the MT web site to see which couplers are designed to work with this locomotive.

I've had similar problems
I've had similar problems with Kato couplers. While the engines (I have an SD70 and SD40) operate fine, the couplers don't. In addition to the problem you mention, I also had height issues......neither Kato matched the coupler height of my other brand engines, or even with each other,,,,jeeez!! you'd think they'd at least match other Katos......IU had 3 Katos at 3 diffent coupler heights......the heights didn't even match from each end of the same engine. The height problem resulted in constant uncouplings. A switch to MT couplers solved all the problems. The MT's have more swing and more length which solved the derailing, and for some reason the height problem went away too, even though I didn't shim them any different.
