Howdy,

I am getting ready to weather some rail and had seen that neat bottle with the tube and roller on top in the magazines. Whats that stuff called and who makes it?

Also, who makes the ballst spreader cylinder that sits on the rails? Are they any good?

Thanks

Chuck McDIESEL

I have a bottle too. It's called "Rail Weathering Solution" by Micro Engineering. It dries a dark rusty brown if that's what you want.

John,

A good suggestion...the ME product is good and does work. But It's not what the original poster was looking for...he was looking for a product with the roller on top of the bottle, exactly like the Rusty Rail painter (which, by the way, is also a great product).

The ballast spreader is made by MicroMark...I don't know that they make an N-scale version, however. Here is a link to the HO-version on their website:

Thanks for all of the comments.  I have the rusty rail solution from M.E., but thought the other product might work better/easier to use.

Thanks for all of the comments!

Actually they do (or maybe I should say did) because I have one stached away at the bottom of a box somewhere!

I have never used it though! After buying it I read some bad comments on how it worked and now just use a small plastic cup, my fingers and a brush!

I have an N-gauge ballast

I have an N-gauge ballast spreader.  Either it doesn't work well or I don't know how to use it well..... in any event, I was never happy with the results and have done better using the "pinch and spread" method using my fingers and a dry paint brush.

Ballast Spreader

I Agree with theabove posts regarding the ballast spreader.... great idea in theory but useless when it comes to practicality.

I found the best method for spreading my ballast was a paper cap and the artist brush... I spread it between the rails first and spread & smoothed it out with the artist brush....

To get the nice slopes on the sides of the track I used a peice of cardboard (you could use a peice of foam or anything with a hard edge) pour you ballast along the edge of your rail. remove the card or foam and watch your ballast fall into place.... if required smooth it out with your artists brush again

I found by using this method it have me the best results..... remember to use your bonding agent to secure your ballast in place once you got the look you want.
