I posted a paper layout design on my Gallery. I would appreciate any suggestions to improve it. I have started working on the bench work, because the general space available is set. It will go on along 2 walls of a roo in my basement.  I do not have a name for it yet. but it is a modern era set in the North East (Mass, NH, Vermont)

ranulf, based on your post in your other thread, it would seem you have found a link to the subject gallery!

I certainly can't find it so maybe you'd be good enough to post a link to it! Smile

Yes Frisco. that's the one I found, upon which my comments were based. Although the one labeeled layout 20 in the same album is a neat one too, I'll have to think about each of them now to see which I like better.

I found the image first in Recent Posts, must have been commenting on it when tokeri51 posted.

Ah, I was looking for

Ah, I was looking for tokeri51, not Thomas Keri - that explains it! (Plus, I obviously completely missed the image posting).

Nice sized space and a nice plan. Only two comments off the top, the minimum radius looks to be about 12 inches; with all that space it would be nice to get at least 15 inches minimum. Also, it would be nice to have a second lead-in track to the TT. Many had two such tracks, one for incoming and one for outgoing.

As ranulf says, the other plan in the gallery also looks very good and, I think, has some advantages over the current one.

New layout

I will place the RAL file in my gallery (Tokeri51). I think the locale will be New England, maybe White River Junction Vermont . It will be a contemporary railroad with a couple of tourist rides to maybe justify a steam engine and some clasic passenger cars I have.

Updated track plan

I simplified the track plan, removed 1 reversing section and eliminated most of the "S" curves. Thanks for all the comments.  The new track plan is at:

Hi Thomas,

I like your track plans, Lots of switching and long running mainlines. I take it that you are going to be running steam, or are you going with diesel? I can't wait to see photos of your progress once building has started. Please keep us all updated.

Thanks again to all that had commented and given me feedback. Last night i redid the North yard so here is a link to the new version

http://www.nscale.net/index.php?q=gallery&g2_itemId=49952

Please ciritique and compare this to my previous one. To Rob, I plan to run mostly diesels freight and one passenger train. I also plan to run occasionaly a "tourist" train that would be steam.

Tokeri51

I like your layout a lot.

A suggestion for consideration. Would changing the middle industrial area to a container port be of interest?  The stand alone sidewalk could be a river port of entry for container shipping. Here's the link showing the area of your layout I'm referring to

Tomas, Bryan is absolutely right! An image or even a link really does work wonders! If you are not sure how to insert an image in your post then please read: Adding Images to Posts, Blog Entries, Articles, etc. Otherwise just copy and paste the URL of the image you would like people to view into the post!

Pretty simple really!

Question on multiple levels

As all of you can see my plan calls for multiple levels (3) . I intend to use either a 1/2" plywood for base, and 1" foam subroadbed, or 2" foam for base and 1" foam as a subroad bed. How do I support levels 2 and 3. I have never used Woodland Scenics foam. My previous layout was a 3x6 cookie cutter made with plywood.

With time on your hands

With time on your hands making trackplan changes is going to be hard to resist. I would make one suggestion  for your consideration, IMO, Take it slow on the design changes.

I've liked your plan from day one. It's a clean, neat, and a great plan.  It has a lot of room for trains, scenery, and trackside activity.

As they say it's your RR and no offence is intended.

Moving out of the staging yard

What is the recomended gradient for N scale, is 5% too much? How many cars can be pulled on 5% up gradient.

2% - 3%

Although I know some get by with grades at 4%.  As a reference, the three grades offered by Woodland Scenics in their foam risers is 2%, 3%, and 4%.

How many cars can be pulled up any grade is completely dependent on what's pulling the cars, and what cars it is pulling.  One of the Kato AC4400CW's I have is going to pull a lot more cars than the Atlas MP15 I have.

Also be careful with steep grades and tight radius curves.  It's not easy for equipment to handle either on their own, and combining the two scenarios is asking for trouble.

Moving out of the staging yard

I will have to start the gradient farther back, just at the last switch coming out of the yard. That will make it very tight under the other track, See the following link with the layout:

Location for a staging yard

My current location for a staging yard requires a very close under pass and a 3% gradient. Can anybody suggest a better place for a staging yard.

Location for a staging yard
Is it possible to have the staging track begin at the top-left corner of the design, just following the curve, and have the track decend along the wall?

Location for a staging yard

The dual track at top left is going up for now so the yard in the back is 1" higher than the tracks at the Pier/Port. So I do not think i can fit the staging yard and access to the main line.

Interesting suggestion

Ron, Michael

The track running in the back would be against the wall and 2' deep, with a 2.5" space, I think if something goes wrong ...

Reaching under it would be rather tough.

Still it is better than my stagging

Maybe if you move the t/o

Maybe if you move the t/o back to the crossing (or the other side of the crossing), and then run the down grade outside the main...

This removes the clearance issue, and lessens the grade needed, since it's over a greater distance.

Something like this;

If you want to stay inside the main, try this (with appropriate larger curves and not as draw)

Cork or Woodland Scenic roadbed
I am about to start laying track on the layout and I would like to ask a question to the forum. Which roadbed is prefered: cork or the Woodland Scenic trackbed. Price is not an issue because they pretty much cost the same.

Cork vs Trackbed

I posted the same question to the Yahoo Nscale user's group and you could not believe the amount of response I got and the trouble I stirred.  It seems it is almost a religious issue. You either like cork or you like trackbed. I got at least 100 responses pretty much divided by the middle on support of either side.

I decided that  I will continue using cork since it is the one I am most familiar.

Moved the yard forward!

As I was starting to trace the tracks over the foam board, I realized that I could move the yard forward and get some elevation on the main track if i just re-arranged it a little bit. So here is the new look, let me know what you guys think, (yes I lost the port scene)

Changes to yard and staging

I almost finished all the track in Carolville and work on the apporach to the yard. I made another design change to the yard! Reduced the size of the staging yard to a single track and added a little more to the Miriamburg yarb by adding a caboose track. Hopefully it adds more operation posibilities. I posted the new design in the gallery. Here is also:

New Layout

Hello everyone. I'm new to this group and I'm in the process of designing a new layout. I am limited in my space and it has to be portable because I have to put it into a closet when I'm not working on it. The largest I can go is 2 feet 6 inches wide by 4 feet 6 inches long. I like to do alot of switching but yet I would also like and interesting mainline run. I'm trying to stay away from a simple oval that looks like it should have a Christmas tree in the middle. Any ideas and suggestions would be welcome. I model Union Pacific and Chicago Northwestern with a hint of Canadian National as a way to acknowledege my Canadian roots. So I would like my new layout to have a midwestern theme. Any ideas anyone?

[Mod note: snowman11022, I think you will be much better served by starting a new thread with your comments and requests. (In fact, in some circles you may be accused of hijacking this thread Wink) With this in mind I have started a new thread for you!

Anyone who wishes to respond to snowman11022, please do so in this thread: http://www.nscale.net/forums/modeling/layout-design-and-planning/2008/06/11/new-layout - BDC]

Thomas, some of the images

Thomas, some of the images you've uploaded are in excess of 2000 pixels wide... for web viewing, 800 is usually fine.

Large high detail images will use up space in a hurry, but with more moderately sized images, you can store hundreds.

And to cover all the broken links, here's a link to Tom's main Gallery.
