About a year ago, I decided to try the Woodland Scenics Mod-U-Rail systen to build a new layout. This system contains strait sections (18 unches by 36 inches), five-sided curved sections for corners (36inches by 36 inches) and square sections (36 inches by 36 inches). It has wooden stands for each module which is primarily made of foam. They are light weight but once you put the kit together they look quite nice and are durable if you don't travel to much with them. If you want to see this system just go to www.woodlandscenics.com. They even have a video showing the system.

My train room measures 10 feet by 13 feet but it has one wall which is a closet and two doorways which can't be blocked. It'll be a perfect setting for the modules and stands and will allow me to use 4 corner modules and 6 straight modules with 4 one foot connects to allow a continuous run should I want to display my trains for visitors. Of course, I'll need a duck under to get into the layout area itself but that isn't so bad at this point. I'll probably use some kind of device on rollers or wheels to get under the layout to avoid crawling on my hands a knees. Plus, with my 5 grandchildren comming over occassionally, it might be a good idea to keep them out ot the center area unless I am with them.

I am going to have clean that room out and get rid of some of the junk that's been accumulated there. That is going to be a big job since some of it was bought for resale and it hasn't been sold yet. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I haven't developed a track plan but am open to suggestions. By the way, despite the fact the straight modules are only 18 inches wide, I see no reason why that can't be extended up to another 6 inches with some sort of outrigger system.

Given the above any and all suggestions are welcome.

The layout would reflect the Northeast US with emphasis on NY, NJ and CT. I plan to do some scenes featuring intermodal, shipbuilding, possibly some car float business and a few other things. I haven't really paid much attention this yet but I do intend to make the layout an interesting one.
