I am new to the N Scale hobby.  I would like to do a basic N scale track layout similar to the Scenic Ridge or the like but I have been
unable to find plans for the Atlas code 55  since I use a Mac computer.  There are plenty of plans available for the code 80 but I think I want to go with more of
a realistic track.  Any help or plans would be appreciate.  I am leaning toward the flex track.

Someone will correct me if

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there is any huge difference between code 80 and code 55 track except the height of the rail.  I'm guessing that any track plan for code 80 track would work just fine for code 55 track as well.  Should there be a reason why not I would be most interested to learn just what it might be.

Welcome Jhend.............

In code 55 say Atlas for instance some of the turnouts are a bit different than code 80. If you are gonna use flex then you can pretty much do what you like. I have seen the "Scenic Ridge" layout, it's a neat layout. Are you trying to keep the same plan or do you want to "Slide rule" it out a bit larger? I don't know if Atlas' track plan designer is available for the MAC. YOU might check their site out for that.

A little off topic from the

A little off topic from the OP's original question, but if you make the effort to check the Atlas web site you will see there are many differences between Atlas code 80 and code 55 track!

For code 80 you have:

  • Curved track radii: 9.75, 11 and 19 inches.
  • Crossings: 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees.
  • Turnouts: Standard (#4), #6 and a standard wye.

For code 55 you have:

  • Curved track radii: 10, 11.25, 12.5, 13.75, 15, 16,25, 17.5, 18.75, 20, 21.25, 30, and 71 inches.
  • Crossings: 11.25, 22.5 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees.
  • Turnouts: #5, #7, #10, a 2.5 wye and a 3.5 wye.

So yes, there is a major difference! Flex-track will, of course, allow you to resolve any radii differences but that will not help the turnout and crossing differences! Converting a code 80 plan to a code 55 plan can result in lots of head scratching!

Use your Mac to design your own plan

Get a copy of Empire Express http://haddonsoftware.com/emexinfo.html

It includes a catalog of Atlass code 55 components.

I appreciate the input ..
One thing I forgot to add... I want to keep the layout near the 3 1/2 X 4 1/2 foot range.  I tried the Empire Express but without knowledge of what radius goes with a #5 turn out or what goes with a #7 etc.. it is like putting together a puzzle without knowing what the picture is, at least for me.

Ah, I had forgotten the Mad

Ah, I had forgotten the Mad Track Planner had a code 55 section!

Atlas also offers a very basic selection of code 55 plans on their web site: http://www.atlasrr.com/code55web/index.htm

Edit: The code 55 plans offered on the site linked to by Ron above are all designed for 2.5 feet by 5 feet! I'm sure it woud be easy to modify any of them to fit the available space. Possible with an enhancement or two! - BDC

I loaded Mike's code 55 plans down converted them to bit-maps and then changed them JEPG images. I loaded the to my Gallery. Here is the link.

Jhendy29,This an element

Jhendy29,

This an element list from the big door plan. It's the best I can format it without it being a pain.  The AT prefix is the Atlas part number. If you can interpret it let me know and I'll see about getting the rest for you.

See ya

Ron
