So this is my new room sized layout..... plan is not completed 100% yet. Obviously because I have two tracks that go nowhere.

So the north eastern section needs a rebuild. but I wanna keep this:

general idea of a sceniced area alive.

Lets look at the image above here for a second so you can see what I am trying to acomplish...

The Northern turnout is at 'sea level' or a height of 0". By the time the two tracks cross over each other they should be at 2.5" and -2.5" respectively. (north and south) The scence is a small industry in the valley. I'm thinking Lumber so I can take advantage of my Shay which will do most of its work in the valley. I would really like the lower track to be a branch line.

As you can tell I modified the peice so that its more compressed and easier to reach the back. I also added a cross over section at 2.5" above 'sea level' which leads to a viaduct whichwill also cross over the valley...and will be quite MASSIVE (possibly 2 viaduct kits by BLI I think is the brand). Not only does this make the area more complicated to model, it has also completley puts a hinderance on how I'm going to get these trains back to the main line....

So I got a couple of ideas on how to fix this northern section of the layout.

1) I put a turnout in the north western corner of the track section that comes off of the terminal (the one with the 11" curved sections) that essentially makes a reversing loop which would add some interesting operations control once I get more than one train on this layout at a time.  The lower section would litterally become a branch line. The lower track in the north-west at sea levelwould be pushed back farther to allow for this branch line. A small turntable would be at the end of the branch line for reversing the locomotives servicing the branch. A smaller town would probably be located near the end of the branch as well.

 2) Scrap the viaduct across the valley. and have the upper section reconnect. How we get to the yard/service center in the lower right... unknown. What to do with the -2.5" section? see section 1, but add another turnout that could go under the whole thing (tunnel style!) with access from under the bench work... maybe that would lead it back to the main line that goes to the south east?

my trains are:

  1. 10 Car Kato Daylight Special with Kato GS4 (for fun. probably not going to be on the layout all the time)
  2.  8 Car Kato UP smooth side with Athearn two-tone Grey Challenger
  3. 8 Car '54 CN Pullmans (Con-cor/Rapido) with soon to be kitbashed Bachmann Mountain (to hopefuly one day soon look like a U1F class)
  4. 6 Car CP Silver & Red (con-cor) pulled by a Kato Mikado
  5. 12 car Microtrain CN Box Car pulled by a pair of Intermountain F7's
  6. 14 car mixed freight pulled by Bachmann Heavy Mountain
  7. 4 car log disconnect cars pulled by a Atlas Shay
  8. 10 car mixed freight. Bachmann lt. mountain

Train 3 and train 4 will be regular sites on the layout. Trains 1 and 2 will be for show with only one of them being on the layout at any given time. Train 7 and 8 will operate in the valley branch line. Train 5, 6 will alternate with 3 and 4 for mainline supremecy.

Since it's just my wife and I operating only three trains will probably ever be active at a give time. But if I planned this properly... I should be able to have trains 3-8 on the board at all times with trains 1-2 doing guest apperances.

Nice track plan

Very nice track plan. You should watch for a couple of things though:

If the layout is against the wall on the right side, you will have a very hard time access things in the upper and lower corners.

Thanks!  I did take the

Thanks! Laughing

I did take the time and do some MAJOR changes to the layout tonight. I'll post them in the morning.

Not as many grades, not as much reaches needed, but the major design elements I wanted are still present. These include:

  • Branch Line
  • long bridge
  • valley section
  • engine facility
  • small yard (expanded and moved)
  • large passenger terminal
The wonderful part? I was able to keep reaches down to 3 1/2 feet in the most difficult locations. Most of the high traffic areas will be 2 feet access now.

From experience, let me
From experience, let me tell you that depending on the hight of the layout a 3.5' reach is a LONG way. I would suggest setting up some sort of temp table at layout height and see if you can place a switch and connect track to it at 3.5'. I know in the building process you will be able to get it done somehow, but at some point that switch may need to be replaced. It is not a comfortable reach unless the layout is very LOW or you have some way get up above the layout in a stable manner... like this item http://www.quadratec.com/manufacture/Top+Side+Creeper/ I have learned to keep my reaches to 2.5" max and only if absolutly necessary. Also, the yard in the lower right corner is at the limit of your reach.. How ya gonna uncouple if the magnet fails?. Keep in mind, you can have a wonderfull layout with these sort of issues and still have a great time. Problem is most large layouts last a long time and things that are a little annoying at first will get to be a real pain after a few years.

Another thought on

Another thought on practical reach over a layout.

Whilst it may be physically possible to reach a given distance into your layout, when done, you have to reach over scenery items (buildings, trees, signals, etc) which means arching over and coming down onto an item, rather than reaching straight out coming into it from the side.

Even the slimmest of us will have our bellies crush something close to the edge... or hands knock over something close to the target item.

With this in mind, practical reach is far less than physical reach.

this is the new revision.

this is the new revision.

More room to work around the layout. Need to reach areas are a lot friendlier, and there are only two major issues I will have with reach now. Thankfully they shouldn't be an issue in the long run.

Branch line is complete and is no longer a small 'shelf' style section. The Branch uses mostly 9 1/2" radius curves. But we will only see the Shay, RDC, and a Mogul on those rails. The rest of the layout sees an average of 11-12" radius curves.

I got my station, my yard, my bridge over water, my valley, and my engine house. I'm pretty happy with this revision.

Based on a 12" grid and it

Based on a 12" grid and it being in an enclosed room(?), it looks like a straight line reach of about 4 feet to the curve in the upper left, and a similar distance to the track in the bottom right.

You must have REAL long arms SurprisedLaughing

No, I'm only 5' 7" To make

No, I'm only 5' 7"Laughing

To make matters worse the flat deck will be 4' off the ground (I have something to stand on!) and the bottom section will end up being 4' 5" off the ground, and the farthest most track on the upper left iwll be 4' 8" off the ground.

The lower right, the only place that will be a big reach will be the one switch if it ever needs a replacement. But that Wye will be seldome used.

Once again in the upper left its the one switch that I can reach that will help me out.

I'll run into reach issues no matter what I do for my layout. I have a reach issue now with my current layout in the old house (4 1/3 reach) and its not a struggle if I stand on a milk crate.
