Here is what can be done to the ,ever popular and usually free, Bachmann coaling tower. I moved the staircase , added bracing to base, made handrails (won't do that again), modified coal chute, added cables and rings and weights, and builders in scale tin roofing. A considerable amount of work to make a structure the ACTRR will soon schedule for destruction due to dieselization.

Nice!

Mike, you've done a crappy job, as usual. :)

And I hear you about "won't ever do that again". I have a big list of those.

"...,ever popular and usually free,..." ??????

You are killing me, Mike.

I really like that kit and you did a great job on it.  From what you have shared with us in the past, your skills are no longer a surprise. Keep sending the photos, I find them inspirational and encouraging.

OK , enough of the mushy stuff.  Now the serious question.

How do I get on the list for some of that 'usually free' stuff????

Ya, brutal. Keep trying though, one day hard work will pay off...

(I'm off to the basement to kick the layout)

The whole yard area is really starting to come together, Mike.  That coaling tower really looks like it belongs there.  As usual, real nice work.

Hi mike,

Everything looks awesome! I would love to see this layout in person. You do beautiful work. Please keep us posted. I also love the back drop. It reminds me of this area I'm living in now. Thanks again for sharing!

Nice work.  Boo hoo on the passage of seam, but at least it gives you a reason for a coaling tower on a diesel road.  What kind of track are you using?  I am not very good at recognizing track from photos.

Thanks,

Hi Guys , here is my latest structure. Nothing fancy. I did have to angle cut the shed and build a footer for the grain bin , as it will sit on a very slight slope.

Definitions

Mike,

Your definition of "crappy work" is, apparently at odds with mine!  Nice job spiffing up that Bachmann coal pocket. I wouldn't have recognized it without studying it.  It would be a shame to raze it so soon!  I just retired one of those and I'm now looking at it with renewed interest.   The Bangor and Aroostook had a concrete coaling tower at Northern Maine Junction and when steam disappeared from the B&A, they converted it to office space.  Now, there's a challenge for you! SurprisedTongue outWink

Next time we drive through Las Cruces, I've got to stop and check out that great looking layout.

You have a really nice weathering sense - not too much, not too litle - just right.  Everytime I see the photos I first assume you are showing us HO scale models.  Really nicely done.

Yes they are. I hate to say it but they are some pretty poor castings. That said they are the only trailer parks out there! I think I can only use these four in my area.

Been Sick But

Robin and I have been sick with the flu for the last four days but on day two I was able to sit up at the bench and transform two Faller (houses under construction) into two buildings for the ghost town that will be where the old mine is in the center loop. The shed os done from cardboard and is about 3/4" tall.

Thanks Mike. Now I know what to do with the set of houses under construction that I've had collecting dust on a shelf for years. Never gave a thought to using them as "houses falling down".

I have had them lying around for ever also and was just looking at them and thought (if I stucco those and tear off that ugly euro tile roof , just maybe!).

Good Luck Jimmi

They Say...

I hate to "me-too" it but, they say emulation is the sincerest form of flattery!  I've had a pair of those things since the 70'sand have been wondering if there was yet another use for them.  Now I know!  Weren't there originally three houses in the kit?

Trailer Trash

Well , I finally got around to putting the Trailers in place in Valle Rojo. Bet they get sick of all the dust from the gravel plant and the trains going by all the time. Oh well thats why the rent is low!

Trailer Trash
Doesn't look too trashy to me. None of the cars are on blocks, and it's missing the TV aerials to ensure they catch their pregnant cousins on Jerry Springer.
Very very sweet work. You guys are an inspiration.

The trailer park and it's details are complete.
You will notice the TV antennas , Tires on the roofs , Fences , Kids and People , and of coarse the discontent workers of Fifer Unobtainium.

Great work! Very inspiring!

Great work! Very inspiring! Junk makes it all look real- I only wish it took as much care and planning to fill a real life property with junk- then my place would be immaculate.

All you need is a few cases of empties and an old Ford up on blocks.

And an old beat up ghettoblaster playin' the oldies.

Yes, all reasons why I'd want to stay away.

Thanks for the invite, I'll drop in if I ever happen to vacation in the area!

Mike, that is some awesome detail work. There is a lot of activity in that small trailer park. How did you manage the lettering on the picket signs? I use MS Paint for my signage, but that does not allow for the hand-made effect,

Now see............

Now see.......these are the kinds of things that make you either want to go and model something for the next two days straight just trying to get something that even remotely resembles this level of excellence, or it makes you want to list everything you own on Evilbay and just get another hobby!

Great job on everything!
