gentlemen

A question for all our master craftsmen:

I need to make several multi-spoked wheels, very similar in plan-form and concept to steam locomotive driving wheels (though that is not their ultimate use)

The wheels will be in the (US-Nscale) 7-10 foot diameter range, which puts them into the 'Driving Wheel' category, and must be 'see-through', not just a casting that is pressed onto a black background disc 'for effect'.

I don't have access to a foundry or machine shop so casting or cutting these wheels on a lathe is not an option, and I so far haven't found anywhere where I can buy them.

I have also tried (unsuccessfully), to make these items myself, using variously light card, heavy card and thin styrene sheet.

The results were 'Less than satisfactory . . .'

So, in view of the above, all and any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Look for Fleischmann junker

Look for Fleischmann junker locos on eBay.

Most of the spoked drives are see-through, and don't have a solid disc on the back.

You could.......

You could maybe locate a few of the traction tire upgrade kits for the Kato Mikado and use them?

It has the see through spokes you're after, and it's relatively cheap too.  Here's an instruction page showing how to install them.  Notice the spokes......

I don't know if they're big enough, but maybe it would work for you?

7 ft. diameter spoked wheels?
These are not wheels with a flange for use on rails are they? If they are for large mine pulleys or horsedrawn logging carts or similar stuff, suggest you start looking at military miniatures - lots of spoked wheels for cannons, caissons, supply carts, etc. there. Can be from a smaller or larger scale, too, as long as the diameter in N works out.

Put the MODELING back in model railroading.

Aaaaaah - exactly!

The wheels (technically 'Jenny Wheels') are indeed for mines - and the possibility of using bits from military miniatures had never occured to me  - thanks heaps.

Definitely something to follow up - who knows what I might find . . . (LOL)
