Hi All,

For some time now I've been struggling with how to install a Micro-Trains coupler on my Atlas 2-6-0 Mogul.  (ATL-41615, N-Scale of course)

The coupler recommended by Micro-Trains on their web site is a 2004 body mount coupler.  I've looked at this one, but to me it would require a fair bit of milling and filing to get it mounted and I'd rather not mess up my tender.

With a bit of experimentation, I've found that the following seems to work with no modification of the tender required:

1.  Remove the screw holding the coupler box closed and remove the coverplate.

2.  Remove the Rapido coupler and rectangular piece of plastic that acts as a spring.

3.  Insert a MT spring with one end resting up against the screw post.  (I slide the spring on to the shaft of a tiny eyeglass screwdriver and then just slide it off into place)

4.  Insert a MT 1049 T-Shank coupler WITHOUT the coupler housing insert.  (I had a spare 1049 kit, but it's possible that other T-Shank couplers will work with a bit of experimentation) (The actual T-Shank part number is MT7 which appears in several kits)  I highly recommend the use of Micro-Trains coupler tweezers for this step.  (MT Part# 988-00-061)

5.  Reinstall coupler box cover and screw.

I've found that the coupler is a bit loose in the up/down direction, but the spring seems to hold it fairly level.  Time will tell if the spring comes loose or shifts position, but it's working at the moment.

If anyone else tries this solution, let me know how you make out.

Dave
