I am using a 2" foam as a base and cork roadbed. How can I mount a tortoise switch machine, do I need to place some wood piece against the foam.

"Quick mounting for Tortoise switch motors"

This technique should work equally as well for extruded foam.

I

I had a similar problem. I have a 2" base foam with a 1" above..... The instructions for the tortoise switch machine say that you can use a longer wire if your base is over 1". This leaves you with the problem of how to mount the machine to the foam.

I solved the problem by mounting the switch to a piece of 1/8" masonite and screwing the switch machine to the bottom of it. The whole assembly then fits into a hole cut into the foam. This allows me to prewire and adjust the machine/ switch on the work bench.

I am at work at the moment this evening I will post some pictures of the assembly.

Thank you

Tanks to Bryan and DesertRat for the help. I will have to mount some machines where I have 4" of extruded foam. Also for the wire, what diameter should the hole be.

The minimum diameter would be the length of the throw of the switch. BUT I generally assume that the hole will not be in exactly the correct place... even with the template provided in the instructions.... and I make the hole bigger.

I would suggest mounting the first switch and machine temporary in a scrap piece of foam to work out all the odd details of how to make it work.
