Hi Bryan, Another refugee from Atlas. N-scaler who is probably going to move in a year, so considering devoting some time to Z-scale. Have read through some of the threads, and probably prefer this format, where there is one guy in charge who answers only to himself. Was getting a little uncomfortable over at Atlas anyway. To have product requests referred to as "whining", even in joking, doesn't sit well with me. Bill P.S. Hope Jerry DeBene finds his way here. Maybe someone archived his classes and can post them here :?:

The way others are talking about it, one would think we'd just experienced a natural disaster! Well, about me. 38 year old IT Professional, dad and husband from Nevada. My son and I started this back in Nov '03, believe it or not. So, we're still newbies to this hobby. We built a Terrain for Trains High Sierra layout. Great experience but next time will try to scratch build.

I've been a guest (lurker) her for a few months and a model railroader wantabe for about 20 years. Finally, in my midfifties, decided to readjust my priorities and jump in. In the real, read that working, world I'm a Professional Land Surveyor. I've been surveying property boundaries, highway and railroad right-of-ways and creating terrain maps for over 30 years. I'm now teaching the subject at a community college in Columbus, Ohio. Those I've talked to about this hobby suggested picking a railroad and time period that I was interested in first. Then research that to influence how I put my layout together. The idea always stated was that this would help limit the type of equipment that I needed to make it look right. Guess I'm just a contrary cuss and had to go exactly the opposite direction with my prototype. The Ohio Central System Sothern Operations http://www.ohiocentral.com/ and http://www.ocsteam.com/. One person I talked to said if it fits on rails that railroad might have one. The Fallen Flags site listing for OC http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/oc/oc.html is just a sample. 9 Steam locomotives in the inventory as a beginning.

Hey all. I'm another refugee from the A-board. Some of you may have known me as PJ over there. Good to be here among nscalers I'm familiar with and alot that I'm not. Not much to say about myself really. Been into railroading all my life since I was a babe (grandfathers, uncles, etc worked for PRR, PC and coal mines in PA). Been into modeling all my life. Been into nscale for about 7 yrs. I consider myself a medium grade modeler but I like it

Welcome Kanone5 Not quite as much traffic here as the Atlas board, so every new member and poster is important to us. Todd has done a great job with the features and links at this site, making it a nice launch site when you want to find out about N scale things. A continuing growing membership will help make the forum section reach a critical mass when there will always be new topics and something to talk about. Thanks for posting.

Hi Folks, I manage a family owned model railroad product manufacturing company (nscaleloads.com) and I model in both N and On30. I have found most forums to be a useful tool to harvest ideas and prototype information. Hence I will be checking in from time to time. Kind regards, Bill

Hello: I'm JB. My wife, Judy, & I are building a layout (obviously N). I started about 4 yrs ago while still working. After retiring 2 yrs ago, I haven't taken much time to work on the RR. We have many interests and have let this one slip. I'm planning to get going again this fall. We live in NE IL (outside Grayslake) and enjoy outside activities this time of the year. I build the bench & trackwork and Judy builds the structures. We have a dedicated room (12x13) with finished ceiling and walls. The benchwork is open so far, only a little scenery and an uncompleted mainline. I did build a 2 1/2 turn helix to change levels. 2nd attempt was a keeper. There are a lot of HO'ers around, but haven't met many N-Scalers. We did go to the Foxvalley club meetings, but have since dropped membership in NMRA. I read NScale mag and have found some helpful hints in there. I am getting serious about DCC and have been a "reading member" of several Yahoo groups on the subject. I see from the poll that the majority here use Digitrax. That was the way I wae leaning, until I saw articles about Rail-Lynx, but it looks like that isn't for "N". I would appreciate any replies from users of DCC as to why they chose what they did & a note from anyone living in NE ILL or SE WI that would like to share ideas. Thx for the forum............ "JB"

Well, since N scale discussion forums seem to be falling like flies this month, thought I'd sign up for yet another one and hope it lasts a while. First, Atlas shut down its forums until at least August, then the Model Railroad Forum on Gamers.com shut down last week, evidently along with the whole website. Yesterday, Trainboard and RailImages disappeared as well. Fortunately RailWire is still up, but does not appear very active, so I joined here as well. I've used the same name, either thirdrail or third_rail (if someone already registered as the former) on every board, although I also used my name on the Atlas forums. At any rate, the shutdown of RailImages is going to hurt all the forums. Glad to see some familiar names aound here.

Re:Welcome new nScale.net Members
I thought I might introduce myself; I'm 40 and living in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, about 300km east of Perth, with my wife and 2 young children (4 and 2). I am the town's GP (family physician). I do not have a train set, but I do have a garden shed... My last experience with model trains was when I was 15; my father built a HO Hornby analogue layout on a baseboard which could be raised by pulleys up to the ceiling. I enjoyed it for a short time, but was also developing an interest in girls/beer etc. Anxious to avoid "missing the boat" with my own daughter and son, I thought I should contemplate a model railway before they have grown up too much. My present persuasion is to have an n gauge DCC permanent layout in the shed, possibly hooking up a PC for added control. My first research question is which track manufacturer's product should I buy? Has anyone compiled a review comparing cost per unit track length, realism in appearance, reliability and ease of electrical connections etc.? I look forward to reading the posts. Peter Lines

Peter - Here is a place to start in your quest for track information: http://www.nscale.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=111&highlight=track+poll I believe we already have a few threads on this topic. Hello there - My name is Wade Hutchison, and I'm a 42 year old professional living in central PA. I've been interested in starting a model railroad for many years, but never had the space in my previous house. Two years ago, I bought a house with a large unfinished basement and began the process of finishing. Well, about the only thing left to go in this summer is the ceiling and benchwork for my railroad. I stumbled onto this site last week when looking for information on what track to start with. I thought I'd say "hello" and warn you that I'll have a bunch of questions. I'll start by asking if it's worth going to one of the Greenberg train shows? I can get to the July 31st one in Timonium, MD, but I don't really know if it's worth it? What can I expect at one of there shows? Thanks, -----wade

Howdy Y'all I'm another refugee from the Atlas forum looking to find another Nscale fix. So many other sites like MR have too many HOscalers worried about Athearn or MDC & their Blue Box kits. I'm a transplanted Cubs fan now living in Music City USA, Nashville, TN, home of the Grand Ole Opry & WSM radio. Anytime you want some good country music, point your browser to WSMonline.com & listen in. Country fans around the world get to hear true legends along with newbies. We have become le largest metro area in the US without a mass transit rail system. That may change in the next few years if the Music City Star gets funding for construction for the first leg of 5 planned. This line would run on the Nashville & Eastern to Lebanon, TN. I started in Nscale in the 70's when woolworth's sold a Postage Stamp Trix Train set at Christmas. How times have changed for Nscale!

Hello, Everyone! My name is John and I live on Long Island, in NY. I am retired, have just switched to NScale after 49 years in HO. The retirement home has limited space, so the HO is history. I operate a small L-shaped (6' x 12') branchline. One daily mixed freight, one daily coal drag. I joined this forum because I am discovering that this scale is not quite an operational or maintenance duplicate of HO, and I'm in need of some guidance, which, when appropriate, I will put into play in the requisite topic headings. The screen name is Anskar, and the Avatar is the Jersey Central logo. Good to be aboard. Peace, John

Hello! Name is Dennis Skea, in Poughkeepsie, New York (On the Hudson, between NYC and Albany) Into MMR and N scale for about 2 years(after 30 years of "thinking about it"). Have a 4x8 unscenicked layout using Bachmann E-Z track, but mostly I build switching layouts. I have several 1x4 baseboards with 1" foam board on them, and I'm forever rebuilding layouts. on them. My wife says I can have the basement IF I clean it up. Working on that!!! I belong to most of the MMR yahoo sites, subscribe to most of the magazines, and have an extensive library of MMR books. I'm the type that reads EVERYTHING about a subject I'm interested in. So much for now. I'll probably lurk until I have something to add. Dennis SKea

Greetings! I have been an N-scaler for 6 years. My efforts thus far have been in the N-Trak arena. When I recently moved down here to Georgia, I sold my modules to my former club in Virginia because I had half of the group's corners, so I am starting again basicly from scratch. Any of you that were at the June, 2003 show in Richmond VA saw my Aluminium Bridge module in action. I have chosen Santa Fe as my main line, and 1950-1960 as an era, because I love steam and like some of the deisels as well. My fleet consists of a variety of cars, but I have learned the wisdom of going with Microtrains as my car of choice as I have grown weary of doing coupler exchanges. I prefer Kato locomotives for my main motive power, but again I have many from other manufacturers. I have just begun to agressively dabble in DCC, but have had my empire Builder form Digitrax for a long time. I want to learn more about it before I begin constructing my new home layout. By trade I am a Programmer for Manufacturing systems, with an electrical engineering background. Be well all! Glenn

Re:Welcome new nScale.net Members
:D Hola Bryan, N People! I'm a N modeler from Mexico City. I've been involved with scale trains since a while. My dad gave me my first train set when I was about 10 (I'm 34 now!) and we put together a little layout. Since then, I went back and forth to this magnificent hobby... until now: I'm in it for good. Recently I decided along with my family to build a layout and my daughter Daniela (9) is helping me with it. She is great with ground covers and ballast, and is helping me a lot by decorating a Preiser set of unpainted figures. She is talented. I've been buying some stuff lately: My idea is to combine or put together a bit of BNSF history in my layout. I guess this is because my grandfather worked for several years in the Santa Fe railroad. I have some ATSF, BN, GN, CB&Q and BNSF Engines and rolling stock (still need to include some Frisco stuff). I feel glad to be part of this because here in my country N scale is really a challenge: expensive and no popular at all, people really prefers HO. So I'm looking forward to exchange ideas and experience. Thanks!

Introduction
Hello Everyone! My name is Tom and I am working on my first N scale layout. It's very small (no room you know) and is a minor modification of the Carolina Central featured in the N Scale Model Railroad book by Kalmbach. It fits on a hollow core door and uses Atlas Code 80 track. I long for the day when I can fill a bedroom and use sweeping 20" radius curves for 50 car doublestacks pulled by Dash 9's. But for now, its 8 50' Boxcars pulled by a pair of GP 40s with one painfully tight (9 3/4") corner to deal with! Although scarecley necessary, this layout is wired for DCC using the MRC Prodigy system. I have just finished laying track on cork roadbed over pink foam insulation board. I have run trains to check the electrical (and play with the DCC!) and just tonight masked the turnouts for track painting. I hope to get a moment to do that tomorrow, but I have a career (archaeology) and a three year old, so time is always at a premium. Although it's nothing to look at compared to a lot of stuff I see on here, I have posted a photo album that will chronicle the progress of this project. I hope to right an article about the process. Hola Tom, I do deal with tight space too  . I'm building a 4'x4' layout on a corner in my studio room and I'm putting 3 analog circuits that runs on three "geographical" levels: a freight convoy that runs on "floor level", a coal trains that goes on the medium level and passenger train that runs on the upper level. They merge into medium level on the rear end of the layout. I have also room for two patios (yards) and manage my trains to go by. A little village is to be in the centered hill on that forms the upper level. Hopefully, more space will be coming in the future Be welcome. David

Re:Welcome new nScale.net Members
Hello Everyone - I am a plant manager in the Philadelphia area and in my early fiftys. I am interested in building a n scale layout to keep my 7 year old grandson busy. We love to work together in the basement on woodworking and electronic projects and I feel this is the perfect project for him. I am also interested in finding out about any n scale clubs in my area to get me started. I have a Bachman set that we have set up the last several holidays. I have also built a HO scale layout about 20 years ago when my son was young. I would like to build the layout on a hollow core door to keep it light and strong. As I am just getting stated in n scale, I would appreciate anyone forwarding me the titles of any good books on layouts and scenery building in this scale. I am looking forward to this project and this message board. CountryRoads

Thanks for the encouragement
And welcome aboard countryroads. Well, I did get to spray my track today. I used Model Masters Light Earth. I live in the Semi-arrid South Texas region. Around here, the old SP lines don't show rust as much as dust. I have gone to the tracks by my house many times to examine the way they look. I also like to see the tracks from overpasses. This givers you a good "model railroad" perspective of the prototype. My conclusion is that here in South Texas, the track and ties turn the same dusty color. I also started cleaning the rail tops with the brightboy. Didn't get far on that though before kickoff (Colts lose :( ). My over pass remark above brings me to a point. As a miniature wargamer for many years, I always felt that some of the best detailed minature soldiers made for some of the least desirable overall effects. If I stood far enough away from a real person to make him look 15mm tall, I would not be able to see stitching on his colthes, the color of his eyes or many other such details. To the contrary, guys would paint this stuff on their minis. This is obviously my humble opinion. I also want to say that I have the greatest respect for you rivet sanding, grab iron replacing, detail guys. I'm just still undecided at what level I want to enjoy my fledgeling railroad....

Re:Welcome new nScale.net Members
I saw a picture in a model railway book (big picture in a big book and over two pages) wher the evening sun was shinig through some of the trees. There were some birch-trees, some pines, and some other trees, a corn field, grass, a country road, and some deer. It was a beautiful picture. You had to look really really close to see that it was a modle and not the real thing! This was HO, but still... some people like to make the miniature world in such a way that a picture of it will look as close to reality as possible. There are as many ways to model as there are ways to paint a painting. Find the style that suits you best now. You can always change later.

Re:Welcome new nScale.net Members
Well, track is painted and I started the task of cleaning the rail tops. None of the Kalmbach articles or magazine pieces said how hard this was going to be!! My "brightboy" is a wreck and I still have trains that are running crappy. I first did the whole layout (remember, hollow core door. Not big) and thought i had done a good job. HAHAHAHA! My excellent running Atlas geep did the Macarena around the pike. So I scrubbed on the troubled spots. Only a minor improvement. I then took the tack that I will concentrate on just 2 feet at a time. Again, minor gains. I have a feeling this is going to be a slow process... Anyone with tips or suggestions? I will repost this under a more appropriate heading too.

I have been a visitor (lurker) to your site for quite some time now. I have picked up a lot of help and tips just from reading. Just thought I'd finally join. I'm still learning new stuff all the time and trying to gather all the good info available. I try to learn something new about the hobby everyday. I am a member of several other site's as well, and I see some names I recognize here. So...hello to everyone! sandjam

Hi ya SJ, I've been around here, but mostly as a lurker. Gut feel this place is going to get more active in the near future. To the rest of the board. SJ's a pretty dang good modeller type fella. I've used some of his ideas to great benifit.

Really! I haven't seen him in a long time! :P Actually, I joined here just before the hack at the other site, and I'm so glad I did :D Yesterday I logged onto the other site, ans my messenger died. Today I logged on and my javascript was disabled. So seeing as I'm without a firewall or antivirus software I'm gonna stick around here for a while. And when the hack is fixed, well, now I have 2 sites to visit :D Oh yeah, and hi!

Hi Steve; I knew 'jwaldo' was here as well. Beginning to feel a lot like "The Old Homestead" Haven't forgotten about rolling stock; only problem is everything has been packed away for the big move to the new house next week; closing is set for Sept.24th. Pat finally decided on the carpet, and is getting very excited about moving in (not 'moving' per se, however! But if it means a new house and no further moves? Oh Yeah! :D ) All else is settling down rather well. There are those moments, but that's expected. Mother-in-law is doing very much better; even went shopping on her own! Have a Rocky Day - Go GN!

Your personality is a good start :D As I've said before, this is a community, and it's the people that make it what it is, not the level of expertise that you bring... Kick back and enjoy...

Hello My name is Marty Coil. i'm new to this forum and trying to find my way around. I model in N scale that features western roads in the late 40' and early 50's. I spend a great deal of my modeling time making custom cars that are not made by manufactures in a large quanity. I notice some familar people from other forums and am looking forward to participating.
