I've recently acquired a pair of KATO F40PH diesels. How do you install Micro Trains 2004 couplers on them? I've looked at the diagrams that came witht he locomotives and can't figure it out.

I'm not totally familiar
I'm not totally familiar with th F40, but most new Katos (and Atlas') have the coupler held in place by a U shaped clip. There are "hooks" on the sides that snap into slots on either side of the pilot, and a pin (so it really looks more like an E laying on it's side) that goes up through the hole in the coupler and then into a hole in the bottom of the shell to lock the coupler on place. The clip can be popped out by carefully prying with a small screwdriver. Then simply pull out the old coupler, push in the new one and replace the clip. For 2004 couplers on new Katos, you aren't supposed to need any spacers.

Replacing KATO F40PH couplers with Micro Train 2004s

My couplers came today so I immediately looked at the instructions. These require assembly and mounting on the body. There are no instructions for the F40PH but there are for the KATO AC4400 which looks vaguely similar to the KATO F40PH. I am hesitant to do anything on my own at this point because these assemblies are totallly different than anything I have ever had to do. HELP!

It wasn't as bad as I thought. You just remove the springs from the Katos and lift up the E shaped holder. You then remove the Kato couplers, slide the 2004s onto the middle prong of E-shaped holdser and install it back the way they came.
