My dad recently gave me his entire set of N scale stuff to try to sell for him, and I am having a bit of trouble finding any references at all to the exact loco that is the pride of the collection.

So far, I have surmised, from all my digging, that it is a Bachmann 4-8-4 Northern w/52' tender, which is fairly easy to find online in many places... Here comes the rub... The tender is marked Union Pacific, and the loco itself is marked 810 just under the cab window. I have found no references to this particular model anywhere, which makes me believe that it might be fairly rare, or, if I let pessimism grab hold, so common as to be worthless, hehe.

Now, I have found references to this train in HO scale, and in real life, but even they are fairly far and few between. The references to N scale versions are mostly Santa Fe, and some Reading and Burlington, but no Union Pacific.

I loved playing with these trains as a kid, and I would really love to get my dad the best price for his pride and joy of the set, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Wade Burrows

I don't think I've ever

I don't think I've ever seen a UP 4-8-4 Bachmann (which doesn't mean they don't exist), so I would say it's somewhat rare......but  it probably has no more value than your run of the mill Bachmann Northern. Bachmann products are not noted for their "value" regardless , so even if it IS a factory release, I doubt there is any added value to the UP version. It's also possible that the UP version is from the very early releases of the Northern, which were of noticably lower quality than the new versions, which aren't that great either. I don't know how you plan to sell the locos, but if you plan to use that auction site, I'd start with the price you see for other Northerns and let the bidding take care of the rest.

I just looked, and there is a UP Bachmann 4-8-4 on ebay....it is in the old cardboard box, so it definitely is an older model. Current price is $42 with 4 days left. It's a nice looking engine. You can pick up brand new Bachmann Northerns for $60

Thank you all for

Thank you all for responding.

It is an older model, but it doesn't have a cardboard box, it comes in a hard plastic case, that flips open, is yellow, black and clear, and has bachmann written in gold lettering. Tender has its own box, same style...

As for the exact age, I couldn't tell you. My dad got all the stuff from an old lady he knew who had a son that collected the stuff. Son died, mom sold the stuff to my dad, dad messed with them a few times while I was growing up, but never bought anything new... So everything is older than me (1977)...

Some help?

Maybe this will help.......

If you have questions on N scale loco's, this encyclopedia is a great place to start: http://www.visi.com/~spookshow/locos.html

Personally, I have several of these loco's from different eras.  The old ones are not so hot most of the time.  The new ones can be made into excellent performers.
