What happens when the "Love of Your Life" decides SHE wants her own train? Kiss

Well first of all DON'T PANIC!! Tongue out At least not right away. I fully understand ... because my wife loves steam; of ALL types. She loves watching those side-rods ... even on the prototypes.

We lived in Norfolk, VA a few years ago (courtesy of the U.S.Navy). While there we went to a trainshow in Virginia Beach, VA. I was there with the NTRAK club  of which I was a member at the time. My wife came along to "help" as she put it.  During the show she went looking around and got 'hooked' when she spotted a Bachmann Old Time 4-4-0 set ... sooooo, we got that.  Later she found some MDC/Roundhouse (now an Athearn product) Overton passenger cars in Virginia & Truckee colors and fell in love with them. So we bought that set.  Later at another train show, she spotted a Bachmann 2-8-0 Consolidation (the newest one) and so we bought that too (unlettered for now). And at another show she found a set of the MDC/Roundhouse old time freight cars ... and Yep ... bought them too! And if all that wasn't enough, she later found a set of MDC/Roundhouse Overland passenger cars (also an Athearn product now) in, what else, Virginia & Truckee colors. She says she's "Happy!" ... for now. Kiss

In any case, "our" steam roster has grown a bit since: 2 Athearn Challengers; 4 Kato 2-8-2 Mikados (two are hers); 2 Con-Cor GN S2 4-8-4's; and most recently a Bachmann Heavy Mountain 4-8-2.

Of course, all this did not happen at once, but over a period of the last 7 years. But it's been a lot of fun for both of us. CoolKiss

Now if your Loving Spouse has been "bitten" by the 'Train-Bug',  let her shop around at a train show, or maybe a LHS, for whatever looks good to her ... then buy it.

And the 'Benefit?' Well I have an easier time buying stuff for me. Smile But even better is when we are both running trains ... and having tons-of-fun doing so .... Together!

Got your own story? Share it ...  Please. Laughing

Re: What happens when

Carol, my wife of 25 years, usually just lets me putter around by myself.  A few months ago, she accompanied me to my LHS for the first time.  Not too interested, she was just looking around when I heard, "Ooh, a pink car!"

So now I have a Klemme Coop 4750 cu.ft. 3 bay hopper (Intermoutain #65339-24) to run on my mid-1950's ATSF layout.   Although this monster is about the size of one of my GP7's and could probably contain a 40' boxcar, it's rolled out whenever Carol wants it out.

Hey, it helps keep the peace!

Wives and model railroading

I recently returned to the hobby after a 21 year absence. I've been talking about it for a while but I joined an N-Trak club. They recently had a show and my wife went with me to see what it was all about. Now she was one of those wives who think I spend all to much time and money on toy trains, but what she saw at the show may have changed her mind.

What did it? She was looking at some of the buildings on the huge N-Trak layout when she spotted a store that had actual manequins in the window. We went looking for the guy who built that module and she talked to him about his row of buildings and he explain how it was done and what was required. She looked at me and said she'd like to try building one and I agreed.

Now I haven't told her that she might want to watch a DVD from DPM on putting together one of their buiding kits before starting because I think she'll think I am trying to discourage her. I'm not but who knows how women think anyway?Wink

So we'll see what happens next.

Sounds like an appropriate response to me!

A keeper
My Girl wants to put together a Empire Builder powered by CB&Q F7 and not cause its "pretty", but cause she wants a prototype of what her grandfather operated.

Consider yourself lucky. Most females don't like us playing with "toys."
