Is there a way to select what portion of a photo becomes the thumbnail?  Why if by clicking the "create thumbnails now" box when adding photos to the gallery, sometimes the resultant thumbnail is a reduced version of the big picture, and sometimes it is just an unflattering section of the big picture?

Also, why can't the "jump to" menu on the gallery page be in alphabetical order?  It is on the menu you use to select a picture when adding one to your post.  I really do not mean to complain, but it is frustrating.

Not sure I can give you any really specific answers but the following may help!

So far as I know this is not possible.

I believe the system selects the thumbnail size based on the size of the original image. I do agree that the present cropped thumbnail is far from ideal but I am not sure what, if anything, can be done to change this.

Good question! It really does make it difficult, given the number of galleries, to find a specific one. (Note: If you can find a post by the member you are interested in, click on their ID to view their profile, From there you can go directly to their gallery).

Not at all! Perfectly legitimate questions!

Thumbnails are a predefined

Thumbnails are a predefined size/ratio (WxH)... the original image is scaled to fit the closets direction and cropped evenly the other direction.

They are essentially intended to be a small graphical representation of the full sized image, and not intended to show detail... typically they would be linked to the full sized image.

For an alternative to thumbnails, look at BryanC's article on adding images to content.

If you insert the image with the  WYSIWYG tool, you can use the Appearance tab to define the image size... you can then use the  tool to link it to the full sized image.

Towards the bottom left of any of the Gallery pages you'll see "Your Album", which will take you to the root of your gallery.
