I posted a comment to a post earlier this evening.... I came bace later to correct a misspelled word and I lost 3 points?

No you didn't, that's the way it works! The system gives you five points when you start a new thread, three when you post to an existing thread but thinks that any edit is a bad thing and deducts three points! You get even more points for blog entries!
As you probably figured out, at this point in time (pun intended), the number of points you have is meaningless! There has been talk that they may mean something at some point in the future, in which case, everyone will start on a level footing!
