We got shut down by our hosting provider for consuming too many resources on the server. Some of you have heard about this before. Well last night was very serious. The note they sent me said that we were shut down permanently. I begged with them to let us have another chance and I would do everything I could to reduce the resource usage. I have done that but I am also monitoring the resource usage and it doesn't look good.

The site may go down again. If it does, please know that we will try to move the site to another host. I don't know how long it will be done again (if it happens) but we will do everything we can to bring it back up quickly. I would expect at least a full day.

We may make the move anyway to try and avoid more down time. Just be prepared and know that whatever we do, it will be the best we can do for the site.

Thanks for your support.

Not the best news possible!

Not the best news possible! I'm sorry to hear about the resource usage. But I'm glad you were able to talk them into allowing us back up.

When I started to get the Forbidden page I new something wasn't right but had no idea what. If it was still there an awful lot of people would be wondering "what on earth is going on?" At least now we understand.

Are we really using more resources than you anticipated or did the host suddenly start playing "silly bu**er"?

I am sure this means that we will need to move sooner or later. Would it be possible to disable one or more of the heaviest resource guzzlers so at least you would be back in control? I know I'd rather loose one or two capabilities and keep the site on the air over having it suddenly disappear for some period of time.

I don't know if this is feasible but you do have all members email addresses. Would it be possible to do a mass email advising of the current status if we do go of the air?

Once again, thank you very much, Todd, for all of your efforts. They  are really appreciated.

While things have changed at

While things have changed at our hosting service, I don't believe they are bullying us. They have shut us down before and allowed us back up. The difference this time was that the note they sent was a little more on the firm side.

I think that the move is emminent. As a matter of fact I have talked to both Bryan and Tony and we believe it is probably best to start making preparations.

I have already turn off some features, and others turn themselves off if the site starts going berzerk. Most of these features have nothing to do with the forum, except one. Some posts may not show up for as long as three minutes after posting. So please, everyone be patient. Once we move this restriction will be removed.

I have a lot of work to do now, so I may not be very responsive today. I have 6 gigs of site to prepare to move. And as some of you know, moving 6 gigs over the web can be a real pain.

Thanks again to everyone for your support and patience.Smile

ToddWe are  backing you,

Todd

We are  backing you, Bryan, and others 110 %.  We will do as you ask us while you do all the heavy lifting.

I've sorry you are running into the speed bumps. But it's better to get over all of them at once instead of one at a time.

You have my and I'm sure all members support in your endeavors to keep the best N scale sit on the web up and running.

The new hosting site may increase costs.  So I and I'll bet other members, are willing to assist, as each of us can with financial donations.

Todd I really really like the new site it is terrific.  Thank you and your team for it's hard work.

See ya

Todd, it sounds like you'll be plenty busy for a while.  I'll just put my problem on the back burner, or off the stove, until things have settled down.

Edit: After I wrote this, I clicked on Forums just for the heck of it, and I can acess everything now.  Mayne I just became a non-issue!

Good luck,

Uhhh?  "using too many

Uhhh?  "using too many resources".  If I'm following it right, you're using site54.com for hosting and their basic "deal" plan gives 110GB of storage and 2TB of bandwidth.  Nscale.net is using more than that?

Or is it using too many CPU cycles?  That would seem awful hard to do with state of the art 2 - 3 ghz, dual core processors one would expect a good hosting services to have - unless there was some bug, looping or such, in the server side processing of the site.  In which case, there's nowhere you can move that won't have a problem.

We have been with site5 for

We have been with site5 for a while, I am not sure what plan we are on. They are the 6th webhost since we started in 2003.

Yes the problem is CPU cycles. I am not sure the specs on our server, haven't checked since they did the datacenter move a few months back. But even with state of the art processors, the issue is really how many sites they put on one server and what kind of resource control systems do they use. We have been there before with them (on totally different software) and had similar issues with other shared hosts. We get a lot of traffic between members, anonymous users, and bots. It is not uncommon to have 500 users on at one time. You figure the average CMS probably does 30 to 60 queries per pageview, it adds up.

Well, that explains the Forbidden page last night. I trust your judgement, Todd, and you certainly have my support if you choose to switch servers before this one shuts us down for good. If we get notified or not, I'll find where we end up. Good luck, and now I'll sit back and wait for Sootower to comment.

hosting

500 users is not out of the way at all, it's good but a lot of hosting servers get very upset if a site goes to well, all down to the $  their eyes.

Give neopeak.net a chance, very sensible and I have only had one tight squeeze but I did have 150000 visitors in 4 hours and not shut down,

Tell them I recommend you.

Very Important - We may be moving

Todd

Could you please advise what the current position is - based on what has been happening over the last three weekends (overload, site down)?

Are we in danger of another move 'somewhere'?

Just for clarity, and to avoid further confusion .

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, this

If I'm not mistaken, this was all prior to the move to the current setup...

There is not further "move" that I'm aware of... as noted, this is someone jumping in on an old thread, without checking the dates...

The Sunday outages are under investigation...

Once upon a time...

...back in my previous life of wearing multi-toned green and brown, we had a practical joker that liked to "recycle" inspection warnings. He'd leave one laying on the desk after his shift, and of course you KNOW what was read and reacted to (even if the date was obvious). Some laugh factories never go out of style, do they?

I have even learned to stop looking at the "joined" date instead of the 'posted' date once in a while; in defense of Tom it is easy to mistake a post as "current" when it gets you excited, and possibly this was an honest mistake...

So, for next time RTFP; read the FULL post (what did YOU think it meant???).

Dennis

Might I suggest no more

Might I suggest no more posts to this thread, thereby allowing it to sink to the bottom of the list and go to thread heaven?

(The thread title, while very appropriate back then, really makes one do a double take today!)

[Admin note] Just for you Bryan, the subject has been amended to make it a little more obvious Wink
