It seems so based on this article from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/getaways/10/04/tour.by.train.ap/index.html

and confirmed by this site (link extracted from the above article):

http://www.cassrailroad.com/index.html

Check out the Our Locomotives link at the bottom of the page!

Has anyone actually ridden on one of these trains?

So now, if you love the Shay but felt you couldn't have one because it wouldn't fit in, you now have a perfect reason to include one (or maybe two)! Wink

Well, of course when

Well, of course when looking at the Cass site I didn't scroll the home page far enough to find the "Take a Virtual Train Ride" link. Embarassed This turned out to be so good I wanted to make sure you don't miss it, especially if you like steam locomotives!

http://www.cassrailroad.com/trainride.htm

Takes about six minutes to view the entire movie. Double headed Shays and the fireman shoveling coal. Scenery isn't bad either!

I rode the Cass behind #11

I rode the Cass behind #11 in the summer of 2006. We went all the way to the top of the run, Bald Knob, an elevation of 4700 feet, and eleven miles from Cass. I got about 175 pictures of the trip, as well as some sound clips and a few videos.

A very worthwhile trip, all in all, even if it does reside in West VirginiaTongue out...if you're lucky, you'll even get to ride behind the Big 6. It was running the day we were there, and took the third train of the day up the hill...we met it on the way down the hill. (now seems like a good time to add that there are no passing sidings on the line)

One of these years, when I get around to rebuilding my personal website, I'll have some pictures online.

BryanC,

They are two terrific links. And  The video is very good. The sound of the locomotive and the whistles are great.
