Hi again everyone.

I was wondering if anyone here models the Maine Central or lives in Maine or ownes any photos of this area.....

I'm planning on modeling Lewiston Maine, on the backroad division of the Maine Central circa '65-'75.  I was wondering if anyone has any photos of this area so I can better model it.  I'm planning on modeling it track for track in a domino fashon since it's such a small yard/industrial area.  Problem being, I only have 4 pictures of the area from the Maine Central in Color Vol 1 book.  I'd like photos of the track arrangement and industial buildings in the area so I can scratch build or kit bash some of them or if anyone knows of how I could get information pertaining to this.  Thanks again.

I plan to model the Maine

I plan to model the Maine Central in G scale someday when I finish college and have a garden to put it in. Until then I'll have to be content to stare at my Aristo-Craft U25B and occasionally dust it

As for further research, pick up the second and third volumes of the Maine Central series from Morning Sun. I also have the first volume and I'm looking at getting the others soon.

You can also look into Before Guilford by Preston Cook from Old Line Graphics which covers all the roads held by them. I don't know if Lewiston is covered in it at all as I don't own the volume myself, but it ought to be another good reference for the whole system.

Finally, join the Maine Central Historical Society -- or whatever it's called -- and rub elbows with other die-hard Maine Central fans because general interest model railroad sites rarely have the road-specific information one is looking for. As important as the Lewiston/August area was I'm sure the society's publication will have at least one issue dedicated to it.

Beyond railfan publications there are a number of other resources available.  Have you looking into acquiring USGS topo maps or Sanborn insurance maps from the era? What's your collection of railroad-issued reading look like? Do you have any employee timetables or rule books? How about track charts?

I actually have volume 1

I actually have volume 1 and 2 and the befor guilford books.  I also have in my posesion Rules for the operating departmen for 1924, 1952, and 1968.  I've been using google maps to see the layout of the area problem being that the entire yard looks like it's been ripped up with the exception of the main line.  It gives me an idea of what the area looks like but I still need to figure out the track arrangments exactly and I'd like to kit bash or scratch build the industires in the area so photos of that would help, I just don't know where to find them.  As for the historical society, what exactly is it called?  I've tried to google it and nothing really comes up relating to it so I don't know.

Lewiston Maine

Here's the address of the Yahoo MEC group. I am a member and there is good info to be had there.  Questions get good answers but, you have to join to ask a question.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MECRR/

I've been trying to track down (no pun intended) a track plan of the Lewiston yard as it used to be... I'll keep trying.

Lewiston is/was, of course, mainly a milltown with textiles and shoes being primary industries.  Buildings would be typical large factory buildings.  DPM's Wood's Furniture is adaptable as is Gripp's Luggage, which I bashed (unbashed???) into two structures.  I'll post photos later.

Here's a view of Lewiston, looking across the Andoscoggin River.

A nice bit of scenery would be the Great Falls bridge which crosses the Androscoggin River between Auburn and Lewiston.

Oh excellent.  I plan on

Oh excellent.  I plan on modeling the entire Lewiston Maine, MEC yard and industries in that area as it appeared around 65-75.  I'm going to build the layout as several small modules that connect.  One module will be the bridge crossing the Androscoggin River. The plan is to make the layout a fantastic model of the area but also a kind of diorama.  I'd like to build it to be portable etc, but that's info for a different forum.

Anyway, I think that the yahoo group link will be a big help.  Absnut, if you find any other info please bring it to my attention.  I'm in the planning stage of this layout and I want to begin building it by next May or June and I'd like to have every little detail planned out before I dig in.

I wish you luck, Joe.
I wish you luck, Joe.  Data may be a little hard to come by since the "face" of Lewiston has changed a lot in the past 40-50 years.  However, join the MEC group and ask questions.  I'll keep my eyes peeled for info/pics/etc. that may be of help.  If I can get my hands on a plan or pics of the yard as it was, I'll let you know.  I have a RR friend who ives in Auburn... maybe he can come up with something.  Another RR buddy is going to try to locate a plan at the Maine State Library in Augusta.  We'll get you started somehow!!! Subject? Bah!
Urm. There are two volumes of the Preston Cook work or there are two books on the same subject? What are the ISBNs for each?
