I'm interested in hearing what publishers everybody here likes. Do you have a favorite that you buy every offering from? Do you buy purely based on content rather than by production?
I have books in my collection from dozens of publishers, but probably the most come from Morning Sun Books. (I've never actually sorted them by publisher!) While I certainly enjoy their offerings I am lately finding a lot of other publishers that have produced fine volumes over the years. I'm particularly enamored with the offerings of Old Line Graphics who turned out a series of books from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s on mostly Eastern railroading. For the period they have very high production values and feature some phenomenal illustrations, but, sadly, almost all of them are now out of print. I also, in the last year, started acquiring volumes from Four Ways West which, like the other "slideshow-in-a-book" offerings, provide a great glimpse at railroading elsewhere.
Of course, great railroad books didn't begin with the advent of color printing. I've found a number of older books, especially from Superior Publishing, from the 1960s and '70s to be very informative and insightful. Don't forget that a number of colleges and universities operate publishing houses with the Indiana University Press being one of the most railfan-friendly around. They have produced a number of railroad history titles that span the country coast-to-coast.
So, what publishers do you see the most in your collections? You've all got at least some on your shelves, right?
