I've been following the construction of a new iron ore rail line in my home state (Western Australia).
An article written about it appears in the Railway Gazette International.
There's some sizable stats listed, but I'm curious how they really fair on a global basis... it's not like Oz is the only place iron ore's mined/railed, and I'm sure there are trains with more than two Dash 9-4400CW up front... cars with 40tonne (44ton) axle loads... 3km (1.86miles) per day of track laying... 68kg/m (137lb/yd) rail... 2·5km (1.55mile) long trains of up to 240 cars... 30,000 tonnes (33,069tons) of ore per train.
How do these figures stack up against lines you're aware of?
