On a recent train trip I was able to get some pictures of a few prototype couplings and since this topic comes up every once in awhile, I thought some of you might be interested! Anyway, for better or worse, here they are:

The photos would be a lot more useful if you could explain what exactly we're looking at. There sure are a lot of connections in there...

You are absolutely right! Unfortunately I have no idea what the answer is!

I just had the opportunity to take the pictures and did so thinking that someone might find them interesting and/or useful!

To be totally honest, if someone else had posted this thread I would probably have ignored it!

I guess the only thing

I guess the only thing missing is; posing the question.

"Can anyone identify the different coupler configurations pictured?"

The lower two photos look

The lower two photos look just like the connection between the commuter cars I ride.  I believe beside the coupler and air hose, there is a power cable (the multi wire cable w/red connector), and a control cable (which also has multiple wires in the cable, maybe I could count the pins on one of these left laying around...) for when the cab is operated from the opposite end of the train (the thick cable blue connector).
