One of the things I like about Micro Trains is that on the back of the jewel case you can find a brief discription of the model inside.  It generally gives great information along with the era or years that the piece was in built or in service.

I recently found a 40' Steel Ice Reefer that states on the back that is was built in 1950 but that it was repainted in 1966 and leased to the American Beef Packers Inc.

I was always under the impression that ice reefers were long gone by the mid sixties.  I guess not which brings my question.  Just how long was the ice reefer in service?

Thanks for your time.

ice reefers

I have read that ice-cooled reefers survived into the mid-1970s, although their number decreased drastically by the mid-60's when the plug door was introduced and used on mechanical reefers.

I too thought the ice-cooled were gone before then, but I am relieved, as I have had to forward-date my layout to 1966 and I have several beautiful ice-cooled Pacific Fruit Express cars, plus an icing platform next to my freight house.

Take a look at this fairly extensive article I found on Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigerator_car
