Default FRED- Flashing Red End Of Train Device

How would I make a FRED- Flashing Red End Of Train Device? I see them on prototype trains. I need the extra boost of realism!

I saw one at a show a couple weeks ago and it makes such a big difference on the back of a train.

I made one using a Miniatronics circuit board and it didn't cost me anywhere near $50; it was closer to $15.

The $50.00 is for a pack of 5. Thats $10.00 each.

Or about $45.00 get the kit installed with the rolling stock.

i thought 30 shipped wasnt too bad. I pay around 11.99 for a 90T NS hopper at my LHS and 14.99 is the going rate for 1 of the FREDs. That right there is 27, plus having it installed and shipped, well worth what i paid. Im currently eyeing a railbox from them as well. especially if i like the 90t enough.

If you equip a few freight cars with EOTs they will always have to be at the end of your trains. That effectively makes them cabooses. (cabeese?, caboosii?)

If you are into operations and do a lot of shunting; the EOT equiped cars may hinder smooth operations as a caboose once did, at times.

My plan is to just equip cabooses with EOTs until someone can come up with a way to move them from car to car efficiently and easily; and without great expense.
(The voices I hear in my head may not be real, but sometimes they come up with a good idea.)

    Have fun.

The EOT "FRED" on the back of the cars that come from GTAR Works are a small clear LED. It's mounted to the body of the car and not the coupler. Simply turn the FRED off, by the switch on the bottom of the car. You could always place the car somewhere else in the train, and use another equipted car at the rear.

The EOT is small enough that it's hard to see on a moving train, between cars, unless you're a rivit counter. I bought several pieces of rolling stock with the FRED installed from GATR Works just for this reason. They even installed a FRED on one of my Kato Amtrak Ph 4 MHC for $25.00.
