I like the circular herald you posted ("Muschka") but it does look very derivative of ATSF. Some possible tweaks could be:

    1. Rotate the cross in the center 45 degrees - then it resembles a railroad crossbuck. Could even go so far as to print the railroad name across the angles of the crossbuck, rather than on the outer circular path.

    2. Invert colors, so that the thick stroke of the circle and the cross are your bright color, against a dark field.

As for the passes you've mocked up, what feels off to me about them is the font. Somehow, it feels too... ordinary. I think some form of speed lettering, a-la RIO GRANDE could be in order. Capital letters at the very least; it's odd to have upper and lower case in the railroad name.

One other option for a logo element might be a tall cactus (in lieu of the cartoon characters). A cactus could evoke memories of Wile E. and Roadrunner or Speedy Gonzales, without being a direct reference. Maybe let the cactus form the left edge of a flag shape (almost like it is serving as the flagpole) and the name or initials goes on the flag.

    Just a bunch of ideas...

That Muschka Activity Works sign was created for me by someone else in Micro$oft Train Simulator world about 10 years ago when I was heavy into it. He knew I like BNSF so that's why that herald. I like your idea of a crossbuck. I was thinking of red crossbuck on yellow background and lettering. I am trying to stay away from using the cartoon images cuz I don't want to get sued by Warner Bros. for copyrights infringement. Using something like a cactus my flip the bill instead but that remains to be seen. I'm not very good on graphic designs on PC. I was good at on the old technology using the real tools with paper and ink before computer software came to light. That was more than 30 years ago and I was going to school for Graphic Arts. I never finished it.

As for the speed lettering idea, I like it too. Right now I have to open my PSP 8 and get started on it. Thanks for the tips. I will take it into consideration.

I like the look, but should probably have a line for who it is issued to. Also, I assume you fill all those roles and need to sign 4 times? haha
