    Default How to make Easy fiber optic lighting that anyone can do.

    This is how I do it, thought I would share.

    Tools needed:

    CA, Pliers, LED (brighter is better), diode if converting to 12volts, clear plastic rod (plasti-struct sells them), heat shrink, lighter, drill and bit.



    Hold the LED with the pliers to keep it from flipping over when you drill it.



    Once you get it started drilling, make sure you do not drill into the wire in the led. You can see it if you look at one up close.



    Put some CA on a piece of paper then dip the end of your clear rod in it, and stick it in the hole you drilled.



    From the test picture you can see the red light going up the tube, but also going everywhere else.



    Cover the tube with heat shrink and melt on with a lighter, be careful not to melt it so much you bend the rod.

    Now you see the light coming out the end of the heat shrink, but still going everywhere from the led.



    Cover it with a bigger heat shrink



    Now you have a flexible fiberoptic led to place on your layout.



    As you can see, the light is much brighter on the end, than on the sides.



    Take your lighter and melt the tip forming a ball, and it will act like a diffuser.



    Possibilities are endless, could this be a fire in a trash can for a bum? or a campfire? your choice. Hope you like the tutorial.

    Scott can you give the size of the LED and the bit and fiber optic strand you used?

    Use a bi-color LED and you could use it in a searchlight signal or a dwarf. A porch light on your house might be another choice.

    The LED is large enough that you could probably use 3 or 4 pipes. Instead of drilling one hole, file the top of LED flat, then just clump 3 or 4 pipes together and heat shrink them to the LED.

    Here is what I used yellow ones for, to look like old High Pressure Sodium lights..

    Drilled holes in my building. 1/16th holes



    Mounted plastic rod and LED, what do you think?





    Notice how small the light looks/actually is? Thought I would share with you all incase anyone else wanted to try.

    I had an idea once for using fiber optics to simulate fluorescent and neon tubes but since the light is mostly internally reflected, you'd need something a bit more translucent to increase the scattering of light, I guess.

    Ur idea is a great one too. All you need to do it modify my plan by sanding the clear rod to make it frosted. Then cap both ends to keep the light in. I done it after reading your comment to show you.

    The dock light turned out great Scott. I'm going to copy your idea with a FO on the building that I'm working on now. It needs a light over the entry door. The florescent light idea is fantastic! Thanks for the pics.
