Default Athearn to (finally) do a fresh run of 2-8-0's and Overton passenger cars

All very well and good, but where are the Overland cars? It's been like forever!

Well... it says in the announcement they have a split frame. I couldn't tell on Mark's pictures if the old version also had that, so there may be hope. OTOH, the announcement says nothing about DCC...

When I get time I'll try to take a close look at mine and see if it has a split frame

What sort of Quality are Athearn in N? Are they up to Kato standards for steam? And is that Canadian Pacific they are releasing? There's no announcement link posted.

I can't vouch for their motive power as I don't own any, but I do have three of the Athearn/Roundhouse 34' coaches and they're pretty sweet little cars. Well detailed, stable, took well to bodymounted couplers on 9.75" corners.

I have two of these which will eventually be used on a micro-addition to the layout. Good to know the body mounts work on tight radius, I was wondering about that.

Their steamers are excellent runners - some of the best ever. Unfortunately, they are not DCC-Ready (or at least they haven't been in the past).

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for them. Did you see an ad? Is that a Canadian Pacific version they're releasing?

I have DCC'd a couple of these original issues. While tight fitting the chip in the tender, it is an easy job.
Northern Pacific and Black Hills RR in N, of course!!

I used some MTL 2004 pre-assembled coupler boxes on them, just sorta drove the screw right up through the 'porch' on the front and nipped the excess off. A little dabble of paint and weathering obscured the end of the screw nicely. A little sparingly applied plastic cement at the interface between coupler and chassis might help but given how light these things are I doubt it's necessary. I'm relying on just the screw to hold them on and they aren't going anywhere.

https://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Micr...l-00102052.htm These little guys. Needed one to convert my Atlas 2-6-0, had some left over, gave it a shot.

It seems the conversion won't be necessary on this run, though. The flyer that Mark linked says they already have McHenry couplers installed. But it's nice info to have if you get one of the older Roundhouse releases that come with truck mounted rapidos.

Anybody know of a good brick'n'morter dealer that takes web reservations for Athearn products? N Scale Supply has banned me for life (don't ask, lol) and N Scale Division has backed off on what Athearn products they take reservations for (mostly none).

    Thanks,

They don't have their ecommerce up yet, but try giving the old Caboose Hobbies guys a call in Denver. http://www.caboosehobbies.com/

Unfortunately, they are a shell of their former selves.

Mark, I'm not sure Blue Ridge Hobbies ( contactus@blueridgehobbies.com ) carries Athearn, but email them and ask. They are good about doing pre-orders.

I use them for any item that I need, that is available from Walthers, as they have the lowest prices I have found, on line.

Also, try the Little Choo Choo Shop (800-334-2466), in Spencer NC. I believe they are a dealer for Horizon Hobbies (owners of Athearn), and would take a pre-order.
