I guess it only has to move 1 car at a time, so tractive effort isn't a big concern. The pig does the hard work up the hill.

Still, I am fascinated. This looks both easier and harder to model than the pig.

I also have another suggestion for the pig. Don't power it via cables. That is, set up the cable in a large loop (disappearing under the layout) where it lays flat. Instead of pulling the cable and lifting the car, use some other mechanism (I'm thinking a long arm on a wheel to push it) to move it along. That eliminates the cable lifting problem.
