Added a light kit to Kato's Operation North Pole coaches. Not super easy but satisfying if you take your time and don't rush it.

NOTE: the light is much dimmer once the basement lights come on. They are only this glaring bright because I turned off the room light.

I encountered a locomotive that seems like it was actually underwater -- this was apparently from an estate sale in PA so doubt that it was from any of the recent hurricane flooding.

Anyway, it was in great cosmetic shape and I initially just did a basic clean and lube (minimal disassembly -- in this case just took off bottom gear cover and tender lid to grease gears and oil motor shaft) and it ran fairly readily. However, it seemed to be dragging quite a bit -- like there was lots of excess resistance. So I took off the shell and found first signs of mud -- actual clumps of clay were inside the shell. So I had to take the chassis apart and low-and-behold, full of mud / clay.

Thankfully it seems as if the Tender was untouched -- and this is an MDC/Athearn/RoundHouse 2-6-0 so motor is in Tender. Anyway, quite a bit of cleaning and fresh lubrication (and a bit of extra break-in time) and it is running quite nicely.

Yes, made them myself: a box from the UPS Store, foam core board, and "silly foam" or something like that from Hobby Lobby.

I finally got to try out Kato's Operation North Pole over the weekend by running all the coaches (lighted!) on a three clubs combined N-Trak layout at a train show. Didn't get a chance to decoderized the loco so pulled it with a freight loco. It was a HUGE layout with three clubs combined modules. At one time, the lead train had mechanical problems so trains behind it were backed up. Before you knew it you had 8 trains behind on a stop order. It was on the straightest part of the layout so you sight down 70 feet and see 8 head lights. It was an awesome sight to witness! I wished I had a picture of that. Steam, diesel, passenger, freight, unit trains...
