    Default I am back!!

    Hey...

I started N-Scaling in 2009 and I also joined this forum at that time. My sites were big and my goals were high, then my basement flooded out. Not to mention the economy.... this hobby is a small fortune! By 2010, I sold everything of value and pretty much quit altogether. Since then, things turned around, married in 2012, baby boys in 2014 and 2016, work is great again and the basement is ready!

    I AM BACK!!

My 4 year old's first words were "choo-choo," he loves trains and they pass behind our house daily and hourly even. Fortunately, they don't toot their horns near my home and the commuter line is about 300 feet behind my house. We all love the trains... and the wife to!

So, I am getting back into this with a fresh start and my kids are excited. When I first started in 2009, my goals were huge. My layout was massive, encompassing an entire room that is about 20 x 15. I opted to dive into the deep end with DCC and it was also frustrating using Atlas flex track. I want instant success now, so I am starting with a basic 4 x 8 table. I just ordered a Kato starter set and added a V1 and V5 into the mix. My plan is to develop this and then mix in DCC. When I get all this working perfectly, I will expand the layout into the entire room, etc. I may or may not go back to Atlas... but my immediate goal is simple... get trains running with my kids. This is a hobby for a lifetime and my previous mistake was trying to do it overnight.

Thanks for listening! I am looking forward to being back in this community!

    Mike

Good to have you back, mac

If you want to gradually expand, do spend some thoughts about a modular system (maybe after the 4x8 ) maybe TTrak or FreeMo-N might fit your bill, or the almighty NTrak? Helps a lot with building small sections step by step, at least for me...

    Welcome back!

I would second what Heiko says. Make the new layout in small sections that can be disassembled for transport. So, when you got to move, it's easy to take with.

And congrats on the train loving wife !

Moosey, Moosey, give the guy some time to breath. Cool your hooves. LOL I'm sure he'll get to it, when he can. He probably already knows we are a visual group, here.

And welcome back @macrailer! I too, suffered from the ALL AT ONCE syndrome. Now, taking my time. Trying to do it right. Nothing fancy, just doing it slowly. Good luck to you and you new layout.

It sounds like you've figured out the most important thing - get the trains running! I've been working on my room-sized layout for nearly a decade and still have quite a ways to go before I finish. But thanks to Unitrack I've been running trains almost from Day One, and I doubt I would've stuck with it this long without that little perk.

    Good luck!

    @Paul Schmidt

Darn tootin' Paul. Someone needs to explain the facts of nscale.net life to these young whipper-snappers, and that's right, Moose stepped up. Now where's dem' photos?!

Sorry for unexciting pictures......but the trains just arrived. Went with the Chicago Metra set by Kato. My 4 year old insisted on a double decker passenger cars. : )

While I have more track and switches coming over the next week, my first goal is achieved! Table is up and trains are running!

My next goal is to incorporate a freight train and get into DCC fairly quickly while trying to avoid robbing my local bank. Ages ago, I began a layout using a Digitrax Zephyr for DCC. I started to get the hang of it quickly, but I was thinking of bringing it down a notch. I am only working on a 4 x 8 table. Leaning towards an NCE power Cab, the EZ command seems like garbage. Once I get DCC operating smoothly, I will focus on a track design and will engage in scenery.

Again, I appreciate all the encouragement! You are a great group of N-Scalers!

OH...I LOVE KATO!! 1-2-3..trains run! I loved Atlas track... but time spent soldering, gluing and praying...KATO is for me!

NO pics of trains are "unexciting" - thy're ALL good! What you have so far is looking good as well AND trains ARE running, that's always are big plus!

Now time to escalate, expand, grow, enlarge, conquer the world with N Scale, spend all of your hard earned dollars, become a train hermit, neglect your family, take additional sick days even unpaid ones, loose your job because your using the work computer to design layouts .... and you will trust me, well at least the first few anyway
    Cheers Tony

Since you already have the Zephyr my suggestion is to bring that back to life to see if it suits your needs. It's a great starter system. I still use mine that I got 10 years ago. Very simple to use and if you have a DC throttle you can hook that up to the Zephyr and now you and your son can run trains simultaneously. No additional cash outlay...initially!

I sold the Zephyr years ago...so I am starting from square one. For under $200 I can get up and running with NCE... Digitrax will be $100 more, etc. Still deciding, researching and investigating.
