    @Erie Penn

Moose bid you hearty welcome to the greatest wee n scale forum on da interweb!

There are plenty of people to learn from here, and plenty more to awe and inspire if you have a mind to be awed and inspired!

Just remember a few kinda' sort'a n-scale.net rules and tools:

    1. Post photos and post often ... Unless you want a Moose stampede heading your way!
    2. If you want to get a member's attention, type their screen name with an "@" in front, and the member will get a notification, kinda like Moose did herein...
    3. Plus, there's a wee little "Thanks" button in the lower left corner of people's posts that you can click on to give 'em a quick "thank you" for their post...
    4. And the biggie, it's your railroad, so if you have a mind to do something that pleases ya', do it no matter what some other rail-weenie's opinion might be ... Unless it's the Reach Police; you have to do what they say, 'cause there be consequence, nasty consequences, if you don't...

Hi! I'm new and joined to ask some questions in regards to n-scale dcc train setups. I've worked with a lot of miniatures through my life, from model airplanes, cars, and Gundams to Warhammer. I've mostly removed all of my hobbies to try and save money, but of course my fiancee just wanted to drag me back in by bringing up model trains far too often, knowing they're right up my alley.

So, I'm considering bashing it together my love of steam engines in the old west, my love of more modern steam engines, and my hobby of Dungeons and Dragons to make some model railroads running around the old west with some under mountain miniature dungeons. Pretty sure I can find a decent number of 10-15mm fantasy minis that won't dwarf the train, and also have some fun with tired dragons irritated with trains rumbling too close to their lairs.

    Default New to modelling

    Hello Everyone,

I am very new to modelling.
I have always been fascinated by model trains since i was a child... but unfortunately the availability of hobby train sets in India was extremely limited.

I have finally been able to start off my collection (in bits and pieces .. since the prices in India seem to be comparatively higher than elsewhere).
But i do look forward to building on this .. and will certainly be looking for a lot os advice and help.

Glad to be part of this forum
    Regards
    Rajandrav

    Default Hello all!

    Hello from Mars, Pa.
I have played with trains off and on for years. My dad's 1950's vintage Lionel. As a teen in the 1970's, the tyco HO stuff that went with our slot car set. Then when my wife and I had kids in the 90's, I got a couple N scale Bachmann sets that are still functioning along with a donated Aurora Postage stamp train (Santa Fe F unit with passenger cars).

Now, I'm in the initial stages of planning a largish layout in N scale using DCC (actually DCC++ driven by JRMI on PI). I've already gotten my hands dirty by adding a decoder to a Con Cor E8 that I picked up from ebay. I hope to use this site as another source of info and help on this journey. Maybe I'll learn enough to be able to help others as I learn.
    Thank you,
    John Zerbe

So, I found this site looking for a guide on swapping out the Kato couplers on a GG1 with MicroTrains...

My first run-in with model trains was my Dad building the layout from "An HO Railroad that Grows" in our basement a *long* time ago. I wanted to get into building a layout, chose to go with N Scale because I wanted to run LONG trains and started a layout on a 4'x8' sheet of homasote. Sadly, budget got in the way before I got anything to the point of even being able to run trains (and I was going for a rather large NTrak module...)

Then, got married, small house with no room for anything, now we're in a house with plenty of room for a layout (once we finish unpacking the boxes in the basement,) but I've got room for a shelf layout in my home office.

I'm going with DCC, have already installed my first decoder in an Atlas SD-60M, going to be installing a decoder in my Kato GG1, and at some point replacing the decoder in my Bachman DDA40X with a better model. The layout itself is going to be a small switching layout, based on industries around here, using Unitrack on foam-board on shelving. Unfortunately, the shelf layout won't let me run my "big steam" that I picked up recently, my UP 4-8-8-4... Or at least, not in any way except a "back and forth" down the straightaway...

Once I get started in the basement where I'll have more room, I'm thinking a double- or triple-deck layout, loosely based on the Lake State Railway with some trackage from the old, defunct, Detroit & Mackinac which I'm going to treat as an excursion line to explain running Big Boys, DDA40Xs, GG1s, and other classics. Plus, well, the D&M ran through the town my grandparents had a house in...
