Continuous Brightness Lighting in Locomotives:
http://www.pollensoftware.com/railroad/
[575 clicks]
Continuous Brightness Lighting tries to overcome the prevalent problem of lighting in model locomotives. The problem is that when the train starts to move the locomotive (headlight) is completely unlit, and as the train speeds up (i.e. higher voltages applied) the light gets brighter. The worst part is, even at top speed the light is usually nothing more than a dull orange glow from the outside.

The Teton Short Line has been assisting a major customer in the design and construction of a rotary car dumper. We looked at the prototypes (12 inches to the foot scale) and the only one we know of in HO scale by Walthers and decided they were all to big for our fleet of MDC ore cars. The TSL does operate in the '50s & '60s but we're not above borrowing a bit of "future" technology if its fun to do so. This project is well underway, with much of the construction complete, but we're posting this on the chance that you might find it useful or maybe have experience that we can use

Atlas GP30 Locomotive:

[662 clicks]
planned to install DN146A decoders in these locos, but they turned out to be just a tad too long to fit in the top of the loco shell. So I used Digitrax DZ121 decoders. (The DZ143 decoder only appeared on the scene much later.) ANDRÉ KRITZINGER

Atlas GP40:
http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/grela/atlasgp40.html
[577 clicks]
The easiest solution to decoder installation in the N scale Atlas GP40 would be to get hold of an Atlas GP40-2 or GP38 frame. A perfect fit in the GP40, it's decoder ready and just needs a Digitrax DN146A or DN163A0 dropped in. Then maybe you can negotiate to sell the old GP40 frame to someone like John Claudino at Aztec. Or you could get a decoder-ready modified frame from Aztec - John does excellent work. Described below is the quicker and cheaper, but slightly more difficult route, which entails some frame milling in order to make room for a Digitrax DZ121 or DZ143 decoder. ANDRÉ KRITZINGER

Bachmann N Scale Doodlebug:
http://www.awrr.com/doodlbg1.html
[729 clicks]
The Doodlebug is a nifty little model which, at first glance, has plenty of room for a decoder installation. However, upon closer inspection, that tempting passenger compartment may not the ideal venue for a decoder after all; those side windows and cabin lighting would put the decoder (no matter how minute) on full-time display for all to see. It would further compound the matter if you wanted add passengers and other details (livestock, carry-on parcels, etc.) to the interior. Oh, what a dilemma! But where else could one hide a decoder? Introduction to Soldering:
http://www.irational.org/sic/radio/solder.html
[491 clicks]
Soldering is the process of a making a sound electrical and mechanical joint between certain metals by joining them with a soft solder. This is a low temperature melting point alloy of lead and tin. The joint is heated to the correct temperature by soldering iron. For most electronic work miniature mains powered soldering irons are used. These consist of a handle onto which is mounted the heating element. On the end of the heating element is what is known as the "bit", so called because it is the bit that heats the joint up. Solder melts at around 190 degrees Centigrade, and the bit reaches a temperature of over 250 degrees Centigrade. This temperature is plenty hot enough to inflict a nasty burn, consequently care should be taken.

Opto-Isolated Input Block Detector:
http://home.neo.rr.com/mrwithdcc/detector.html
[442 clicks]
When I started with command control back in the 80's mainly CTC 16 then CTC 16/e I decided I did not want to use common rail wiring. I used the common of the rectifier of the system. Today this is referred to as direct home wiring with DCC. Today I know of two systems that use this type common, Digitrax and Easy-DCC. There may be other out there, and more that can be converted to direct home wiring. One thing that direct home wiring does not like is a common across power districts. A common return is fine with in districts, but there should not be any common crossing the gaps of the separate districts. This is what lead me to opto-isolate the inputs of my detectors. I needed to make sure there were no possible paths across the districts. This as it turns out was a good move at the time. It solved a few problems, and when I went to DCC in 1996, I saw Digitrax was using direct home wiring so I now use a Digitrax Chief and my detectors were all ready as well as the rest of my layout.

** The Intermodal Container FAQ:
http://www.robl.w1.com/Transport/intermod.htm
[706 clicks]
Because the subject of intermodal containers continued to come up in both prototype and model discussions on the net from time to time, and these discussions frequently brought out conjecture and incorrect assumptions about containers, I first put together this FAQ on the subject of containers in 1995. The initial document was distributed through several internet news groups. In 1996, the document was converted to an HTML Web page and enhanced with photographs. The document has grown considerably since its initial version, in large part due to comments and suggestions received from many people in the transportation and logistics business. This feedback is hereby gratefully acknowledged. As a writer/photographer specializing in transportation subjects, I\'ve visited a number of container facilities in both the U.S. and Europe. I also keep up with a variety of transportation trade publications which cover developments in this area. So, the following information is based on personal observation as well as reference works.

This N-scale model railroad represents the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway's crossing of the Arizona Divide. Located about four miles west of Flagstaff in northern Arizona, it was the second highest point on the Santa Fe's high-speed main line from Chicago to Los Angeles. Step back in time to when the Super Chief was the train, Route 66 was the road, and the Ponderosa pine country of Coconino County was the place to witness the glory days of this great railroad!

deLuxe innovations was started in 1993 with the express purpose of building things that were needed and that would advance the industry. N Scale was in a rut, with lots of things being built that were just \"wrong\". We had the philosophy that just wouldn\'t allow us to do things like using a coal car as a \"stand in\" for a woodchip car, or printing any and all boxcar paint schemes on a PS-1. We just couldn\'t do it. As we grew, we sure made mistakes and had our successes, but we have always stayed true to our purpose. N Scale is a modelers scale, and deserves to have accurate equipment. Our dedication to integration continues. Starting with our release of the first ever etched metal parts for a ready to run car (1994\'s Twinstack\'s metal walkways) through our full dimension underframe and etched metal roofwalk (1996\'s 1944 AAR Boxcar) to the challenging but cool RoadRailer system (2000), we have been dedicated to offering good running and accurate as possible N Scale products for enthusiasts.

Most often many ideas that come to mind as part of a solution to a problem - exist only for a brief moment. Joseph Polchlopek, Owner & inventor knows this. At Joe's Model Trains Co...good ideas don't get away! In particular, take a look at the mini paint roller makes weathering rails easy. No air brushing or brush painting. The roller follows of the track rail as a guide for the roller. It's adjustable for N and HO Paints spikes and plates at the same time.

Not a true online vendor but they do sell exclusively N Scale. Slow site too. Worth a look though. Easiest way to buy from them is when they have items on ebay. Update: You may now buy from them directly from them (you have to find an item of interest, note it number, and then enter that number on an order form - not the easiest approach) but they do have an extensive selection. Speed of the web site seems about normal.

Abandoned and Active Railroads of the Pacific Northwest:
http://www.brian894x4.com/AbandonedRRmainpage.html
[430 clicks]
This site has a tremendous collection of photos and articles about historicly significant abandoned and active railroads in the Pacific Northwest. There is a good deal about loggong railroads and short lines. A lot of emphasis is placed on bridges and tunnels because the PNW is loaded with them from the Rockies to the sea. The historical Milwalkee Road and the Union Pacific routes are well represented. I will be returning to this site many times in the near future to peruse the wealth of information presented. The author has spent a significant amout of time and money to do his in-depth research.
