Members Only?

I generally steer clear of model railroading related philosophies, but after reading this post I thought the author deserved a mention. David K. Smith articulates some of the issues within the model railroading hobby quite eloquently. Titled “Members Only”, David discusses the apparent divide between ‘model railroaders’ and ‘modelers’ - discussing the difference between [...]

First Impressions: Railway Express Miniatures MOW Equipment

BryanC's picture

This is a basic description of some of the Railway Express Miniatures MOW cast metal kits. I decided to use some MOW equipment to enhance the short spur which is a part of Scenery Project 10 and which was decided upon with the help of the discussion which may be seen here: Alligator Lines Scenery Project 10: Suggestions Wanted!

Atlas 2-6-0 Mogul MT Coupler Conversion - Possible Solution

DaveNB's picture

Hi All,

For some time now I've been struggling with how to install a Micro-Trains coupler on my Atlas 2-6-0 Mogul.  (ATL-41615, N-Scale of course)

The coupler recommended by Micro-Trains on their web site is a 2004 body mount coupler.  I've looked at this one, but to me it would require a fair bit of milling and filing to get it mounted and I'd rather not mess up my tender.

With a bit of experimentation, I've found that the following seems to work with no modification of the tender required:

Athearn "A KITBASHERS DREAM" ?

thlw's picture

If anyone recalls an article on "Athearn a KITBASHERS DREAM" in model railroader's October 1985 issue, that is if Athearn was the best then. However, the article was done for ho scale back then. And today would that be either ATLAS, KATO,BACHMANN or MODELPOWER locomotives? Lastly is AHTEARN still a "KITBASHERS DREAM" especially with the abundance of manufacturers and N-SCALE around?

First time Painting Brass

buzzrexx's picture

Hey guys,

I'm a brass virgin, so my newest project is coming along slowly- a wide cab for a diesel loco; but I am very pleased with the results. I've got it all assembled to the plastic shell, all i have left are the handrails.

So I'm almost ready to paint it, but I don't know if there is a special way that is needed to prep it. I will be using Testor's acrylic paints and an airbrush.

 Thanks in advance.

Cheyenne Coaling Tower Article

LoTek's picture

I am starting a new section on my layout to represent the Laramie, WY steam service area.  I already have done Cheyenne and its huge steam service area and roundhouse.  I built the IHC 650 ton coaling tower after reading an article in one of the railroad mags.  It made a much easier job of it than the directions that come with the kit.  I have all the old mags and I lost the index list I made when we moved 2 years ago.  Does anyone remember the article on building the IHC N-scale coaling and which issue it is in?  I am going blind looking thru all my old issues.  It would have been i

Minimum radius track for long cars

diffusedmind's picture

hi all, I was wondering what the minimum radius curved track is that can be run with longer passenger cars.  the cars specifically are the kato amtrak superliners and the union pacific smoothsides.  i had tried to run these cars on viaduct track once before, but the curve was too sharp and the body of the cars was riding up on the sidewall and it derailed.  i'd like to incorporate some raised viaduct portions to my layout, but i don't want to buy a ton of unitrack to find out which is appropriate.  thanks all.

for those of us in the northeastern illinois/southeastern wisconsin area, a new hobby shop opened on august 1st on main street in antioch, illinois. model trains and hobbies is the name of the shop, and the owner is a great guy that as it turns out i have known since our days in grade school. he is an n scale modeler, so there is a distinct emphasis on n scale, but he will be stocking all scales. so happy days ahead, and we finally have a shop in our area that we can call home.
