You should run this again

taz-n-rr's picture
You should run this again and ask for the major secondary operations we run (or in my case are planning to run)... Charles

Eh?

I model the 1970s which is neither modern nor transition era. I operate with the cars that fit the industries on my layout.

Need some more votes here Guys

dieselfan1's picture
Lots of looks not many votes. I guess not all have layouts but will soon. I really didn't consider the 70's to be another era , although it probably is because railroads have changed so much since then, so as for railohio , I guess you will have to vote Other. Sorry .

What about the 60's & 70's?

Fredenberg's picture

Hi All,

I had to vote "OTHER" because I primarily model northeastern Pennsylvania, 1968-1973. That period (roughly 1960-1976) provides a very broad range of modeling opportunities.

The mid 60's to early 70's allows for roofwalk and non-roofwalk boxcars, 2, 3 and 4-bay open coal hoppers, 40', 50', 60' and 86' boxcars, first and second generation diesels, a few wooden boxcars and reefers, various passenger car styles, various locomotive paint schemes within the same railroad etc.

Basically a mixture of new and old.  It is a fantastic modeling and railroad history period between the post-transition era and the modern era. It was a time of major reconstruction, consolidation and mergers.

By all means my favorite!!

dieselfan 1 A great poll, thanks for asking. I run what would be termed 'Transition' on the TVR, so voted acordingly, but I also run a mining 'tram (the Kaiser's) and wanted to vote for it as well under 'other'. Sadly, the system wouldn't let me cast a second vote - a single vote would seem to be the only vote it permits (*@X% computers), so therefore, for what its worth there is another 'other' vote available - add it on if you can. But, again, thanks for asking. Komata "TVR - serving the Northern Taranaki . . ."

Transition to Transition Era?

David Masten's picture
I'm not sure whether to check steam era or transition. 1946 is the year my railroad is set in. So when is transition era? Obviously it includes the 1950's. I don't think anyone would call the 1930's transition era even though many Class 1s had started running diesels for yard work and top of the line passenger trains. Would the dividing line be the introduction of road freight engines such as EMD's F-series which corresponds to when the early adopters started selling/retiring their early diesels such as E-units? Or maybe when Alco was allowed to produce RS units for American markets (1946)?

David,

I suspect that for most US railroads, the 'Transiiton era' would be from the end of WW II, and the release of EMD from Government contracts, enabling it to start to sell non-government-directed companies. I could be wrong in this, but observation indicates that the period was 1945 - 1955, and was finally over around 1960 (or whenever it was that N & W finally succumbed and purchased diesels). Just a thought (and if I'm wrong, please correct me fellow members)

Starting to get an idea now what you run

Two surprises here. No Intermodal votes. No modern freight and passenger votes. Keep the votes coming.

RoadRailers, Autoracks,

RoadRailers, Autoracks, Spine and container trains rule NS my layout. . . every now and then maybe a manifest freight or 120 car NS coal train with 3 SD80MACs

It must be the influence of

NH2006's picture
It must be the influence of the Moffat, but I have 3 coal trains, 1 manifest, 1 ore car train, and the occasional passenger run.

Basically i run my SD70M

nscaler711's picture
Basically i run my SD70M with a mix of modern/modified Boxcars, grain, and ocassional ( spellcheck i know) coal. is it odd to see a SD70 pulling 11 cars? on my layout nope its purty normal heh heh. id would have voted Modern Freight/Passenger but my Espee E7 pulls the Amtrak Daylight (4 car, Coach, Coach, Cafe Coach, and Cab/Coach lol too many coaches!)

btw, i am distressed, id

nscaler711's picture

btw, i am distressed, id have my P42 pull the train but sadly, her motor died, so i cant run her *tear*
