Moving To New Server (and possibly new ownership)

The smart people are done looking at the server. Their diagnosis is to upgrade the OS and add two more megabytes of ram. The good news is that to accomplish this feat, we need to move to a new server. Why is that good you ask? It is good because our server is less expensive now, and the only way to pay the current market value is to move to another physical box. Of course there is a catch, if we add the suggested amount of ram, then we will be paying 40 dollars more than our current bill. We are barely making it on advertising revenue so we still might have a performance issue even after moving to new hardware (without adding the increased ram).

Another issue is that I really am not in any shape to take care of this site anymore. I really haven't been much help for quite some time. So with that in mind, 5 days after our 5th anniversary, I am offering the site up for sale. I have not spoken to any of my moderaters or Bryan about this yet. They get first right of refusal on taking over the site. If none of them want to take on the financial responsibility, then the offer for sale will be open to the public.

If you, or someone you know, would be capable of handling the responsiblity this site requires, please contact me at: todd (dot) vaules (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Thanks to everyone that has had the patience to put up the the techincal issues this site has endured over the past months. This is a great community and my hopes are that this site will continue for at least another five years while maintaining the excellence that it's members have endowed upon it.

The move to the new server will happen as early as this evening. Please pardon our mess during the move.

My Warmest Regards and Thanks,

Todd Vaules

Hello Todd, I hate to hear this but it may be best for you at this time in your life.

We have enjoyed your site for the past 2+ years. We wish you the best of the best.

No matter what happens to nscale.net it will not be the same without as the CEO.

See ya Ron

Hi Todd:

Being back up on a new server is a good thing; the possibility of loosing you is not a good thing! However, we all know that the only constant in life is change and it impacts all of us from time to time.

I would like to offer you a huge thank you for all the efforts you have put into the site. It is undoubtedly the best there is out there! Obviously there other model railroading sites out there but for an N scaler, absolutely nothing beats this one. And it is all due to your hard work and efforts!

While I would fully expect any new owner to put their stamp on the site I sincerely hope they don't mess with it too much. The last thing we need is to have nScale.net transformed into "just another modeling railroading site"!

I wish you good health, happiness and success in whatever endeavors you undertake in the future. Oh yes, stay in touch!

Bryan C

I very much appreciate your sentiments but as I see it, you and the other moderators and ESPECIALLY the Co-admin of this site (the other Bryan) have worked very hard to keep this site up and running. Yes I usually have to take care of the technical issues, but that pales when compared to what you and the general membership has done to make this place so special.

To Everyone:

Please understand that I am giving up the site in hope that someone else can give it the attention it needs. As most of you know, my health has been a major issue the past couple of years. And most recently my wife of 18 years has decided to end our marriage. I must use my what energy I do have on my son (as well as trying to improve my health). This site and its members deserve an owner that will keep the site moving forward. I really look at my decision as a way to show how much I care about nscale.net. There is plenty of room for improvement and I just don't have the ability anymore to keep things moving forward. I also think that you all deserve more responsive technical support (not to be confused with the great support our Co-admin and the Moderators provide).

Many of you have been with nScale.net for many years, a fact for which I am most proud. I have been truly blessed to have this community for the past five years.

Enough of my blathering! Please get the work out about the availability of nScale.net. We have to find someone to take it over!

In the event that someone doesn't come forward, I will make sure that a static version of the site remains for reference purposes.

Logged Out, It Happened to Me!

I just got logged out while submitting my previous comment. I assume the session timed out due to how long I was working on that post. All I had to do is hit the login button and was taken back to the yet to be submitted post, every word of the post still in the editor! As I recall, the site intentionally logs out a user if they take more than 10 or 15 minutes to complete a post. That feature is used to help protect the person submitting content as well as the site. The scenario being that if you leave your computer and someone else comes in behind you and submits inappropriate content or steals your account.

Thanks!

Tood, I cant thank you enough for providing this great site. The brotherhood of N scale modelers has been awesome. The information and N scale education I have recieved from this group is beyond anything ny where. We can only hope that some one will take over and fill your capeabile shoes. The best to you Ted

Being logged out happened

Being logged out happened to me again this morning but there may be a good explanation! I was logged in (along with with a number of other sites, and had to run an errand so I put the PC in standby mode. When I returned, a little over an hour later and brought it back to life, I was logged out! And I had to really log back in, clicking the Login button didn't do it! (FWIW, CNN and USAtoday were both displaying the "cannot display this page" message while other sites were still fine).

Todd,

If you decide to leave, I'd just like to thank you, BryanC and the other Bryan for helping me with my initial problems logging in to the site when I first joined. This site has been very helpful to me and I'll continue to visit it daily until it no longer exists. Thanks again (I hope this is not a eulogy).

I've enjoyed this website

I've enjoyed this website immensely, Todd, and can't thank you enough for having the foresight and energy to develop it.  It appears that you will forever have a following with or without the website.  Best of luck to you as you proceed to get on with your life and concentrate more on the immediate issues that confront you.  I had posted an earlier response but it apparently got lost in the transition.   Regards and well wishes for you in the future.

Moving to New Server and new ownership

I hate to see you go. But you are the one who has to decide what is good for you and not the rest of us. I know how ones personal life can interfere with hobbies, jobs and just life in general. Personally, this site has given me an opportunity to vent my views and feelings when I returned to model railroading back in June. I was able to post things I couldn't express elsewhere nor get certain questions answered. I know I haven't added to my blog for a while but things do happen. But that's life. I am not leaving but I may not be on as often as I have been primarily for two reasons: 1. I need to devote more time to writing a history of my layout (which still has no name) which starts with Conrail's abandonment of all carfloat operations in 1968 to the present day. 2. I need to worjk on the layout. But I'll keep everyone here posted. Too bad I can't afford to buy this site. Irv

What is involved in running this site?

a_batey's picture
Bryan just out of interest what is involved in running this site as far as technicla ability? I own a a forum site related to mountain biking (its not very active at the moment) and was curious as to what program you are using to run this forum. Also how large is this site as in how much server space is required?

The site is in DRUPAL.If
