View Full Version : Another Kato Shinkansen Series 500 Question

The Kato 10-511 or 10-512 addon sets for the Shinkansen Series 500 Bullet Train shows the full 16 cars and their orientation. These images are in Japanese and differ from the image as provided in the full 16 car set, which has been way too long out of production.

As I don't know how to put an image into this post, I'll point you to http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10049766 where you can view the very last pic.

At the top of car 8 which is labelled as 518, there is a small lump and a white thing sticking out. If you look at car 9 (515) you will see the same thing but at the other end.

At work yesterday I asked a complete stranger in the street who happened to be Japanese, if she could read the writing above car 8 and she said it was not proper Japanese writing. It appeared to have a Chinese character or two. But it said something along the lines of "End Of Train"

As this train never runs without the two pointy bits at each end, this does not make sense.

Can someone please tell me what these two lumps are actually for as I don't see them on the full 16 car set.

It probably is the "end of train".
Looking at the video below you can see that all the cars are electrically connected at each end until the end of train cars (0:23).
It looks like the pantograph powers a certain amount of cars which forms half a set, the two end of train car isolates the 2 halves and can probably clearly be seen at ground level as an end of train car (break up point / maintenance).

Thanks for that. Now that I have seen it in the vid, it seems to make sense.
