I finally found the N scale Bachmann passenger Observation car to my Polar Express. I modified it to have a curved end just like in the movie, Unfortunately, it's too risky to make the end platform windows round like in the movie too, so they will stay flat.

In two months I will give this to my son for his birthday. The cars are all painted like in the movie, and now I have to do the following:
-connect the interior lights to the new Kato passenger car electrical contacts
-add interior people
-glue the conductor to the end platform of the observation car along with two kids
-connect the three SM LEDs of the observation car under the porch
-add the DCC decoders for each passenger car

Then I just have to find a suitable box to house the Berkshire, five passenger cars, the Golden Ticket, and a fresh copy of the book. My son will LOVE this.

I love your idea! I too would like to see a photo of this, particularly the observation car modification. I'm intrigued by your
your description.

I guess you're keeping the Berkshire, then. Oh, and hey, don't forget the hobo on top of the Pole-X!

So I just added three micro LEDs to the overlights lights on the end platform on the observation car. They look awesome. Pictures soon.

Great job, really nice work! I can't way to see pictures of it, like in the movie, where it's sliding across the ice! LOL Just kidding. Nice gift.

Thanks! I'm putting together a special box for him for the gift. It will have in it the 2-8-4 DCC and sound equipped 2-8-4 Berkshire, five Bachmann Plus passenger cars with Kato trucks, a laminated golden Polar Express ticket, a bell, and a fresh, Blu-Ray copy of the movie. Each passenger car will be lit from a Digitrax TL1 DCC decoder. If I can find a way to do it, I'll put a sound decoder in one of the passenger cars with Tom Hanks' voice saying "All Aboard!"

You are creating a wonderful gift that your son will cherish for the rest of his life. I'm cheering for you, so that you will get all your ideas done for him. You must record video or take pictures of the look on his face. You are a great Papa!

The only thing that I need to do now is to make the cushioning for the box.

ChicagoNW

Check out a photography shop or the container store they sell foam which is easily adapted for custom equipment cases.

I bought a few of these for SOFT foam cushions in the plastic cases. It requires a little cutting with a hot wire, but makes the rolling stock fit solid in those cases. It would probably work for you.

Don't have a hot wire cutter, just used a knife. Came out great! I'm now all done!

A friend at the club is also assembling a similar train, in time for Christmas. He's installed a sound decoder into one of the coaches, and will have a few of the movie's different songs loaded to play on demand - the theme, the Hot Chocolate song, etc.

Sweet! Where is he getting the songs and how is he getting that information onto the sound decoder?

I'm not sure of the details - I know the decoder supports custom sounds, so I assume he's just replacing engine or other sounds with the new files. I'll see if I can get more details.

My son LOVED the N Scale Polar Express I made him. Was very vocal about getting it too. Now I just have to get the display case hung up on his wall.

To get sounds like the music from the movie, you might install a small FM radio in the car. Then using one of the FM adapters for iPods or mp3 player broadcast the tunes. The broadcast units have a range of ten to twenty feet. They even go through walls. Although you can get a FM radio that is a pen, you might have to strip a slightly larger unit of it's case.

Because the sound system in the car is a radio and you broadcast to it, not only can you play selections from the movie but other music and sounds too. You could even piut your family wishing everyone "Happy Holidays" from the train!

I originally considered this for my CTA L cars but there just isn't enough room inside the small car bodies.

Great job on Polar Express!
I'm just beginning a similar project.

Am new at it. How do you get the lettering on the side
of the car and tender?

I bought some Polar Express decals from eBay that I applied to the side of one of the passenger cars (and only one. Watch the movie once the PE shows up, only one passenger car is marked with gold details). I also used paint to paint the passenger cars in matching colors from the movie and the O scale Polar Express passenger cars.

Thank you gatrhumpy,
i had no idea eBay sold such an item. will look into it. I had noticed only the car in front of the observation car had
the name. I am torn between white and gold on it. I have seen scenes with both, but am convinced of white on the tender.
Thank you again. I used Pennsylvania rr cars for passenger cars, too long but windows were fairly regular.
